That used to crack me up when I worked at a restaurant... "ooh can you put extra cheese on all that, and gimme a large diet coke"
Diet colas are kinda the antithesis of dieting, they fool you into thinking you can eat more, and the sweetness make you crave more sweets

I drink Diet Coke with Splenda, but I've cut down just because I feel it's healthier to exclude soda in my diet altogether, and I'm not obese. Ive always heard that it's the sweetner(Aspartame) they use in regular diet coke that actually causes you to feel crave foods/ behungry and to then overeat.

Well reason number one is Diet Coke tastes mmmmm goood
Reason number two is Diet Coke has no calories so you can enjoy a soda without the calories. Even if you can't cut down on everything bad you eat--every little bit helps and starts to add up.

A lot people believe that drinking Diet Coke is oodles better than regular Coke. Unfortunately, many of these same people overcompensate for that lack of calories with the food they eat. I see the same thing at the movie theater. People will get a Diet Coke along with a large extra-buttered popcorn.

case and point. I started drinking diet coke because my now wife drinks it (her to save the calories for other things) and after a short while I could not drink a regular soda to save my life. the sweet from the sugar is just too much. But I can sit and eat a big fat piece of chocolate cake with a nice diet coke and all is well. I've perplexed myself with this many times and it is just that way. regular coke is way to sweet to drink.

Because usually overweight people have tried every diet out there, which almost always include diet soft drinks. After you've gotten used to diet drinks, regular drinks are too sweet...so you just get what you're used to, and what you like...and hope that it saves you a few calories in the process. I mean, why add calories to an already high calorie meal when you don't even like the taste?

It's an American thing. Many people (not just obese ones) drink diet soda and then get a large meal or very caloric dessert. I read in a book that the artificial sweeteners can actually make it more difficult to lose weight.

Allot of these people are diabetic or pre-diabetic and Dr's orders no sugar drinks. Since I struggle with my own weight and follow the same advice when I am in a don't care mood, yes it does feel like hypocrisy. But if I have a sugary drink I feel way worse than eating a cheeseburger.
