You know. My whole life I have had people trying to put **** in my head to beleive. I always reject it if I do not understand it, and this is why;

If I cannot independently confirm what happened in the bible (as described in the literal sense) is true, then I cannot beleive in it. Because to beleive in anything that I cannot independently verify would be to beleive in something that I do not know, therefore, I would be beleiving in something that I do not really have knowledge in---Therefore, I cannot make a correct assessment.

If you beleive in something that you do not understand or have insufficient knowlege, then you are insane by the very definition of insane.

You cannot beleive in things that are not real or are not known to you to be real.

Therefore I cannot beleive in things that I do not KNOW them to be true. I can only wonder....so therefore I will rather wonder, than be arrogant, and claim knowledge where I have none.

No, virtually every historical event in the Bible can be substantiated by independent evidence. From the walls of Jericho falling down, to the crucifixion of Christ, the events of the Bible can be proven to have actually happened.

In my opinion, yes, it's crap. I dont know where some of the people answering are getting their information, but there is no proof that a jesus ever existed. No carpentry work of his exists. No writings of his own. Of all the many scholars from that time, why are there no other writings about him besides what is written in the bible? If there was a great flood, you would think there would be many books about it. And just because a place actually exists does not mean that a jesus did. I can say that I saw big foot at Wal Mart. Just because the building is really there doesnt prove that I really saw big foot. Human beings wrote the bible, not a god. Also, the bible contradicts itself. It says incest is wrong...but who did Adam and Eve's sons have children with??? It had to have been Eve since they were the first humans on earth according to the bible. And the bible is written in third person, not by who "walked with him", but an outside party. It was also written 40 years after his supposed death. Why wasnt it written during his life?? Because it's made up. There were many religions before Christianity came to be. Christianity is a man made religion that is a copy of the others before it with its own twist and it's own agenda. Christianity puts fear in people to believe in it or live eternal in hell. That's why so many people are Christians. They fear of being punished. But if they'd look at scientific facts and not heresay, they would know that the bible is false and a total lie to all of mankind. I dont know about others, but I would rather believe in something that can be proven than believe in something because I'm told to "or else!"

Maybe religion is a bunch of crap. But the Bible has some things that have been verified by historians and archaeologist. So-that makes the Bible at least partly true. All the rest of the Bible- no one has proved wrong.
If you think the Bible is a bunch of crap-then why don't you go to work and prove something wrong in the Bible-it would make you a rich man-its worth a try.

Wild1,

You can prove that some of the major events happened independently. But you cannot prove the truth of most of the other things in the bible independently. You cannot prove independently that god spoke to all those people who claimed to speak with god, nor can you prove a bunch of the actions that were attributed to christ by objective, independent sources.

Sure, the bible says that Jesus did all these different great things. Of course, the NT was written by a bunch of people who bought into the message of Jesus and whom were trying to build a new religion. Expecting them to be objective and always truthful would be like going to the tobacco industry and asking for truthful objective facts about smoking.... or going to the Toyota dealer and asking for a truthful, non biased opinion on the best small car on the market today.

Ok. Lets be fair and entertain this idea for a moment. Lets say that the bible and all its teachings are false. Lets say that the world poofed into existince through a "Big Bang," and lets say there is no heaven or hell. If you are right, and the bible is false, then I will swallow my pride and admit that I am wrong. I will admit that there is no God and that its all a lie and I will move on.

Now lets say that Jesus really did die on that cross. Lets say that the bible was really written by God inspired men. Lets say that God hand crafted the world into existence and that there really is a heaven and hell. What if you are wrong? See I have nothing to lose. I know where I stand. I believe in Jesus Christ. Either way I walk away from this conversation. But if you were wrong this whole time, then what do you have to lose?

The Bible has lasted through 6 thousand years of humans trying to put a stop to it or change it for their benefit. Discovered Scrolls and secular history prove that the attempts to distort have all failed.
So a book that has survived all the attempts to kill Or pervert it MUST have some divine backing.
But, Most Organized religion is MAN MADE, not GOD MADE.
Most religions have Many rules NOT in the BIBLE, so they are just as you say...B.S.
But the Bible is different, It is inspired and protected by God.

Most of the things in the Bible are absurd, especially the old testament. It's good that you are smart enough to figure out that. I thought you might appreciate some of my favorite quotes.

"A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism." Donald Morgan

"The inspired Bible has been and is the greatest curse of Christendom, and will so remain as long as it is held to be inspired" Robert Green Ingersoll

"The Bible was written by barbarians in a barbarous, coarse and vulgar age." Robert Green Ingersoll

"Most people are bothered by those passages of scripture they do not understand, but the passages that bother me are those I DO understand." Mark Twain

The word "possible" depends on what you believe.

For me, because I believe, its not "possible" to me that the bible is a bunch of crap.

As for everything about religion, thats too complex a topic to crappify. There is some crap in religion, but there is some really good sh1t too.

Its really about YOU, and what YOU believe. I hope you will one day believe something that helps you live a great life. Cheers

I am so with you on this one.
This is book allegedly written over 2000 years ago by men! Isn't it possible that some very enterprising and wise soul wrote this book and presented it to very impressionable masses who believe anything they are told? It's quite possible that Jesus Christ did, in fact, exist. He could have told people that he was the son of god. He could have been an individual with borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, or an all-around con artist.

People are quite impressionable. Many believe what they see and hear as long as it is presented to them with some sort of authority.

I love this question. I'm sure it will provoke a lot of discussion. I've had this conversation myself with my husband and various family members.

Enjoy your responses!

THE SCROLL WAS TURNED INTO A BIBLE..WHY WOULD I BELIEVE IN THAT..IT WAS BURIED AND IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE'S JUNK COLLECTION.

PEOPLE DUG The SCROLL UP TO MAKE MONEY THE MORE FOLLOWERS YOU Have MORE CASH! .THEY MAKE UP STORIES AND BRAIN WASH PEOPLE INTO BELIEVING IT.

THE BIBLE IS SIMILAR TO A LAW...IN THE OLDEN DAYS THEY DIDN'T HAVE GOOD LAW SO THE CHURCH RULED
BUT EVENTUALLY THE COUNTRY HAVE BETTER GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE....THE RELIGION AND GOVERNMENT HAVE CONFLICT ETC ETC

NO ONE REALLY KNOW HOW HUMANS EXIST SO THE BIBLE MADE UP STORIES ABOUT GOD ETC ETC SO PEOPLE WILL PRAY AND GIVE MONEY.......

DON"T LOOK AT ME I HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO ON A BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY THAN SIT INSIDE THE CHURCH AND JUST MY LUCK PAEDOPHILE PRIEST!

IT IS NOT A BUNCH OF CRAP BECAUSE THEY MAKE MONEY MAKING BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF BIBLES......DURING CHRISTMAS PEOPLE BUY PRESENT MORE MONEY FOR ECONOMY ETC ETC.....

CHURCH MAKES MONEY ..BUT PEOPLE ARE SLOWLY THINKING OF BETTER WAYS OF SPENDING THEIR TIME AND MONEY..IF YOU WANT TO HELP THE POOR YOU DONATE INSTEAD OF GIVING TO CHURCH ..AND GOVERNMENT OPEN SOUP KITCHEN AND HIRE LEGAL AIDS ETC ETC SO CHURCH IS NOT REALLY NEEDED ANYMORE....THE GOVERNMENT IS RUNNING THE COUNTRY NOT THE CHURCH ANYMORE.......CERTAIN COUNTRIES CONTROL RELIGION....SO PEOPLE WONT BECOME TOO FANATIC...!!! MY MOM USED TO BUG ME ABOUT CHURCH FINALLY SHE LEAVES ME ALONE!! AND SHE REPECTS MY DECISION....I HAVE MY OWN OPINION AND I MIND MY OWN BUSINESS...I USE MY OWN COMMON SENSE HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE....

I THINK IF YOU LIVE IN A COUNTRY WHERE THEY MAKE YOU HAVE RELIGION THEN YOU WILL HAVE A BIG PROBLEM IF YOU DON'T DO AS THEY SAY......good thing I live in a country that let me choose ..I CAN BE NONE CHURCH PERSON AND no one really cares.
