You people cannot base your knowing of jim morrison off of movies!!!
jim morrison was a great poet and person i love him i think he is one of the best icons and was VERY free spirited. plus my nana met him BEFORE he was famous...pretty wicked eh! i loved him before i knew that and then she told me im like DOUBLE U TEE EFF!
anyways...he is definatly not a "jerk off" and i think he was a genius maybe not "mathletes" genius but just the way he saw the world and interpreted it and how he showed his interpretations through his poetry and songs.
and plus to all those people blamin him for his death it wasnt his fault it was an accident well apparantly he didnt use pamelas heroin right and OD'd himself also here is a quote "I wouldn't mind dying in a plane crash. It'd be a good way to go. I don't want to die in my sleep, or of old age, or OD...I want to feel what it's like. I want to taste it, hear it, smell it. Death is only going to happen to you once; I don't want to miss it." i dont believe he killed himself on purpose.
i hope some of these peoples answeres dont corrupt your love for jim..and if you didnt like him anyways...GRRRR lmao jk but seriously i wish that the rumors are true that he faked his death but i doubt that he did..who would keep it up for this long? but there is a pretty mysterious part to his death maybe look into it when u have the time its pretty interesting plus the fact that jimi and janis both died when they were 27 as well jims was way more mysterious and i dunno if curt cobainreally counts he didnt really die anywhere near jim jimi and janis's time hahaha..and sorry for rambling but i just think jim is so great that i liek to talk about him lots....well tootaloo :)

Both, because anyone who wastes such extreme talent and oppertunity thru the selfishness of drugs and alcohol is totally a jerkoff. Not only did he end his life and cut short what could have been a long time career but he let down millions of fans. Just think of all the genius albums he could have put out if had the time back that he gave up?! And for what exactly? Drugs aint all that. Totally not worth it.

Consider this.....he was a Genius because he was able to use his Jerkoff persona to become famous...a number of his songs were deep in meaning and just shadowy enough in lyrics to get the attention of others.....while he was not ever a great performer, keep in mind the we still remember him and his songs are still played on radio......so....I think he was a Genius-Jerkoff..

I think Jim Morrison was a complicated person. He was musically talented, and he was a very deep thinker. Unfortunately, he was influenced a great deal by alcohol and drugs, and he was a pretty big jerk when he was using -- which was most of the time. So I guess the answer to your question is "BOTH."

If you are speaking of him strictly as a songwriter and not merely as a person, I think you can rule out "jerkoff". As to whether he was a genius, that's a different story. Personally, I think the term is used too loosely. I think he had some moments when he was quite deep and very poetic. At other moments, he wrote fairly uninspired lyrics such as "Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name?" Hardly the stuff of Shakespeare there.

He was a musical genius with a serious weakness for mind altering drugs. Oh and yes he pretty much was a jerk.

Jim Morrison was a pop culture figure (now he's a cult figure), his irreverence, sexy voice and manners and the developing drug fad of those days made him an "idol".
Far from genious what he had was the "duende" to get POPULAR your classical Im-so-sexy-smart-and-oh-sooo-high attitude we see every day now in our "celebrities uncensored".Back then this attitude was quite unique, and it made him special in a way.
