Watch the "Dog Whisperer" He has a ton of pit bulls. It's about how they are raised. They need socialization and love.

I understand where your emotions are with your wifes past. However, I will disagree with you on this question for a couple simple reasons. TRUE, pit bulls are known for being uncontrollable but that is mostly the owners fault. True, pitbulls are mean to people when not socialized from a young age. The way to combat this is simple, a dog should be introduced from a young age to more than 30-100 people before it reaches 1.5 years of age, UNLESS they will be used as a pure protection dog. I don't believe anyone in the US or world needs a PURE PROTECTION dog unless they have something to hide. Pit bulls come from a rough past where they were used as fighting dogs as you stated. However, so did the English and American Bulldogs. The american version was used for litterally bringing down bulls and horses by grabbing and holding their snouts. English versions were used as fighting dogs at the same time pit bulls were. The difference is the breedign standards the two breeds have seen. English bulldogs, after the early 1900's were only bred when a calm and gentle male was bred to a calm female. They did this to make the breed no so vicious. It was also a law that was passed in England that made this happen. Now, the American Pit Bull is the complete opposite. In its history, the meanest and toughest were bred to the meanest and toughest to make the breed that exist today. There was no law in the past that made breeders choose calm or vicious so American owners kept breedign the vicious dogs. So today, you have pit bulls that have the fighting gene still in their genetics while the English bulldogs are no more docile because the fighting gene has literally been bred out. There are breeds that I do believe a special license should be acquired before being able to purchase. These are Rottweilers, Giant Schnauzers, Dobermans, ALL types of American Pit Bulls, and many of the European herders. The reason for this is because there is much more at stake and much more to learn from these breeds than there is from toy dogs, terriers, and other working breeds. These breeds, if not trained or socialized early, can become a problem. The license should revolve around a test which test the owners ability to handle their dog in a rightful and public manner as well as testing teh background and knowledge of teh breed they are purchasing. This in no way contradicts with any amendments to the constitution but instead works as an addition to national, state and city standards. They the fees could be used as "tax collections" and go right back to the city or state. Again, I am sorry to hear of your wifes past but please understand that not all dog owners raise their dogs to be vicious, unthinking or reserved.

A pit bull is just a dog like any other... It's a breed, like any other.... ALL dogs can bite. ALL dogs can kill. A pomeranian killed and infant. Just b/c a select few have been raised and brought up the wrong way, doesn't mean you should blame the whole breed. A pitbull can be just as loving and loyal to someone as any other breed can be. It's like blaming a whole race of people just b/c of the bad things that SOME of them choose to do. It's usually b/c they weren't brought up the right way.... I'm not gonna say I hate all black people just b/c one of them keeps trying to start mess with us around here. Just as I'm not gonna blame a whole breed of dog just b/c SOME were brought up the wrong way.... I mean, really, get a grip! Would you be prejudice against all boys if a boy beat you up? Would you be prejudice against all girls if a girl beat you up? I wouldn't think so. So, why hate all pitbulls just b/c ONE or TWO of them attacked you (or your wife, in this case)? Yes, they may have been bred for fighting or whatnot, but that still doesn't make them ALL bad. A lot of German Shepherds are bred for police work. Are you prejudice against them too? Do you see ALL German Shepherds attacking people? NO.... It's the way they're RAISED and TAUGHT.... Honestly, do some research, for God's sake.... Just b/c your wife had a bad encounter with a couple pits, doesn't mean they're all bad... How many pits have you seen, anyway? I highly doubt very many, if not ONLY those two.... Learn to not be so stereotypical about everything when you don't even know the whole story..... -_- I had a pit/chow mix who /killed/ my cat. I didn't kill my dog over it, though. And it wasn't b/c he was part pit. It was food aggression and I understood that. Any dog can be food agressive towards other animals, and most are.... God forbid you ever get a dog, if you don't have one already.... -__-

Really sorry to hear about your wife........Perhaps you should educate yourself a little more. I dont support dogs that kill, think they need to go right to freezer. Having been in the veterinary field for 20 years Ive seen and heard both sides. I come to believe its much more of a dog owner management issue and outright irresponsibilty on many levels. I also dont think not all dogs are bad the people are story. Some dogs do have there wires crossed so to speak and not just pits. Sometimes it is a training issue but not always. Ive seen some very nasty Goldens and Labs. Something else to keep in mind is it is not only pits that kill. The most aggressive dog I came across in 20 years was a Pointer, yes that wasnt a typo, a Pointer. I really do empathsize with your wife, an friend of mine was recently mauled by a chow/akita cross, shes having her first bout of reconstructive sugery next month. Im not here to defend the pit breed or any of them, just to say, there not the only ones with issues! They just get all of the attention.

Your question automatically assumes that you have no knowledge about dog breeding in general and are informed only by a liberal media who takes stabs at whatever new target will make people hate things in the world. Research it - about ever 10 years or so idiots (lke drug dealers etc) choose a breed to fight - it has been Chow Chows, Dobermans, Rautwilers, and now it is Pit Bulls. They pick these dogs for various reasons - 1st they are some of the SMARTEST dogs and very easy to train. 2nd, they have a very strong and dangerous bite. Now - surprisingly enough did you know that the golden retriver and and black labrador also have as strong of a bite as a pit bull. In 10 years when loser animal abusers chose to make golden retrivers the new cool dog to fight then you all will be up in arms about that breed. No dog is at fault. No dog breed is beyond repair. They are being raised to fight by some people and they are being raised to be wonderful family pets by others. Many people - including the Monks of New Skeet (who know MUCH more than you about animals and raise and treat abused dogs of all breads) strongly believe that no event is EVER the dogs fault - it is ALWAYS THE OWNERS FAULT FOR NOT TEACHING AND TREATING THE DOGS BETTER. Do your research so next time you post a question you wont sound so stupid and nieve. Dont just listen to what people tell you - go research it yourself.

I am not a big fan of the pit bull, but neither am I all for banning them. Any dog can be made to be mean. Tooo many people raise pit bulls to be bad. I am sorry for what happened to your wife. I hope she will be okay. I would say the majority of the pit bulls are good animals. The bad ones just make the others look bad.

2006-08-16 14:51:23 · answer #6 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

Because it's not the dog's fault. It's the people who raise them. Dogs were never initially meant to kill each other or people. They have been trained to attack. It is an awful thing that people do. I met a pit bull that was sweeter than many other dogs I'd seen before. In fact, I was able to bathe it no problem. So next time you think people are weird for liking mean animals, realize that maybe the people who are weird are the ones who train these animals to kill.

you can't blame the breed of dog only the owner on how the raise them my neighbor has a full blooded pit bull and it's friendly as hell it loves other kids and other animals even my daughter has played with the dog and it hasn't hurt her and the ladies friends kids pull on her and she has never once hurt any of them she has had this dog for 8 + years and it haves never hurt a single person or animal its not the breed that's the problem it the owners who don't know how to properly train the dog even a small dog like a Yorkie can be a mean killer if it is trained that way what they should do is crack down on the owners only ppl who knows how to properly train and handle them should own them and you got to be dumb to think its the breed not the owners just a couple of years ago they said rotts were mean killers and they were proved wrong on that to they realized it was owners making them mean not the breed

so don't blame the breed for what studied ppl make them that's kinda raciest towards the breed that's like saying only blacks are gang bangers and all whites are Nazi wake up ppl make animals mean it's not the breed

and sorry to hear about your wife hope she is doing well

reminder sue the hell out of the owners it's there fault the dog is that way

I am very sorry for what happened to your wife. Therefore, I will not argue with you about this. I know how you must feel.

The only thing I will say is that my son moved back home and brought a pit bull puppy with him. She is the most tender and gentle and loving puppy I have ever seen. She was bred and raised for gentleness, not for fighting.

The personality of a pit bull (I've seen others as well) makes their owners particularly attached to them. They are responsive and easy to train; they pay close attention to their owners and want to do what is expected of them. This is the big attraction.

Not all pit bull owners want a killer pet.

The fact that they have a propensity for violence against other dogs, and sometimes people.... that is certainly a problem of our society. I don't know what the solution is, really.

Well I have been around dogs all my life, aggressive and non-aggressive. Pits are not mean, its just the bad breeders and owners that makes them that way. I have met the most sweetest pits in my whole life and I wish people would not just generalize. German shepherds and Rottweilers are more prone to bite and be aggressive than pits. Sorry you feel that way but you cant generelaze and want to rid of something that is just raised in a way to make it more aggressive. Maybe we should just get rid of those people who beat the cr*p of their dogs to make them meaner and get them to fight.
I know what you might have gone through with your wife being attacked, My mother was attacked by two dogs and ended up in the hospital, I know several people who had been attacked. I for once was too, not in a really bad manner but still.
