First they feel they can answer for such a question while they are reading them on brief. But while going into depth they feel sorry and they dont want to waste his time because they can still earn 2 points for each and every answer whatever it may be.
Second thing is to some person simply wants to answer
"I dont know" to score points.Because best answer gets 10 points only but simply answering will also gets them 2 points.
They dont know whether they can get the whole 10.But they can get 10 by answering "I dont know" for 5 questions.
Have a nice day.

I would have to guess they do that because it gives them 2 points. It could also be to let the person know that they are not alone in asking the question and not knowing the answer. Could be any number of reasons. I can only guess on this one as a person can't possibly know why another would answer this way.
Interesting question.

Well for some it seems to be the points, but if there were no points awarded i would still be here. I actually like when people answer this way, it makes me laugh, there are a lot of funny people on this sight and they just pass it on because they enjoy sharing their humour with others. anyway that's how i feel about it. Also some just like being in relationship with others, i think it's just about sharing...it's nice, i love it....

I don't know.
Sorry I couldn't resist. It maybe due to people playing the points game. You get 2 for any answer. Which I really don't understand at all. It's not like you get a prize or anything for the most points.

Because they probably don't know the answer, but can give an idea where to find the answer without doing all the research for you. Or they could just be bored to death, and decide to answer silly questions.

They're attracted to the question, want to be helpful but can't and it's an easy 2 points.

Because they want to let you know that they took the time out of their life to read your question and truly attempt to reflect on the best possible answer, but could not.

I think that it's because they want the 2 points even though they aren't helping at all. I don't think that it should be allowed.
I have often wondered the same thing I just never asked the question.

Because sometimes we don't know, and we genuinely would like to know, so we answer a question with that and watch to see who else answers and if anyone knows. And some questions (like "What is the meaning of life?") are genuinely unanswerable with anything but "I don't know."
