It is so frustrating how much bad grammar and spelling is out on the internet. Most people do not know the difference between there and their or then and than. So tell me why, when there is sooooo much technology out there to "spell check" things, the situation is getting worse. If we want to keep English our language shouldn't we know how to write it???

A lot of people rely on text messaging today, so they abbreviate. A lot of other people are learning English as a second language, so they are trying to spell phonetically.

As a teacher, I was very frustrated last year to learn that my school district had adopted a "no spelling test" theory. We were supposed to use "word walls" to teach our kids to spell. The theory behind that was that the students would look for the words on the wall and learn to spell them by familiarity. The problem with that was that there was no accountability.

Unfortunately, I didn't find my kids learning to spell that way. They just learned to look up at the wall every time they needed to spell a word. It was a huge crutch.

This year, the new reading curriculum uses a spelling quiz -- so I guess it didn't work.

I agree with you completely. I think that part of the problem is that in a lot of schools, it seems that teachers care less about the specifics and more about the overall susbtance of what people write. However, I believe that over time, you will lose the substance too because people will no longer be able to intelligently convey thoughts, feelings, etc. through writing.

I think spell check does make it worse because you don't have to think about or remember how to spell. We assume spell check will catch it. It bothers me alot too.

I hear you! The bad management of basic education in schools is bewildering in my humble opinion.

We are just lazy to go and fix it. You've been guilty of it too. Don't lie.
