Check for a US DOT label on the driver's door jamb. If it's there and says that the car is built to US safety and emissions standards it will be legal to bring it in. If it's not US spec, it can't be imported.

I'd strongly suggest that you have the TX DPS run a check on the VIN first to see if it's been stolen. If it checks clear on that front, they can advise you what you'll need to title and register it in TX.

You have no way of knowing if that automobile is actually legal in any way at all.
It may be in Mexico, illegally, not even Nationalized there.

If you see it again, look for the registration number on the windshield. It may have been tampered with. Even the number on the block may have been disfigured.
This sh** happens.
Be careful.
That car will soon be 32 years old. There are no parts being manufactured. Parts may have to be custom made.

I would really hesitate to do this . . . many of the cars in Mexico are actually . . . STOLEN FROM THE US. If you buy it, bring it back, and when you go to title it, the vin comes up as a stolen vehicle, it will be confiscated. Yep, no money returned to you, either.

I think this is something you need to talk to your insurance agent about. there may be some things that might have to be changed in order for it to be legal in the US. such as some countries dont require cat converters but the US does. call your insurance office.
