Yes, it is for real. You would be getting an academic education, but missing out on the social education everyone needs to be prepared for the real world. Take it from a high school teacher who gets students who have previously been home schooled. Way out of touch with real life expectations.

Yes online school for high school is for real. There are lots of schools out there that do this.
If you want something specific to Texas, try http://www.utexas.edu/cee/dec/uths/diploma.shtml
Yes, you would still be getting as good of an education in school. You would also hopefully have a chance to mature beyond a typical high school student. When people say homeschooled kids lack in social skills, I often suspect it's just that they are different in their social skills and don't act the way most teens do. However, that really only applies to kids who spent roughly k-high school homeschooling. You're not going to suddenly have different social skills overnight because you start homeschooling, which is what some people answering seem to be saying. (Hello?)
If this is something you want to do and you are dedicated to making it work, then look into it further, get the information for your dad and take it from there. While everybody is naysaying the idea, the University of Texas actually has a means for you to get your diploma through online learning. Think of that: a university full of professors and people who are supposed to know a whole lot about education have something set up for you to be able to get an education online. These aren't just people with opinions; they are people who did their research and actually developed a program that people have been using for 8 years now and is approved by the Texas Education Agency, another organization filled with people who know about education, the same ones who approve public schools. If they felt that your social skills would suffer from such a set up, which would ultimately cause you to struggle in university and in jobs, do you really think they would allow such a thing? Don't doubt its validity as a choice.

Yes, online high schools CAN be accredited and just as good as (if not better than) public and private schools. Just make sure you do your homework BEFORE signing up or sending money - you don't want some place that's just selling diplomas. Check out their track record, contact a nearby university to see if the admissions office has heard of them and what they think/know.
See if you can get your hands on a copy of _The Teenage Liberation Handbook_ by Grace Llewellyn (see if your local public library has it, your high school probably won't). She has a whole section on convincing your parents to let you 'unschool', including rebuttals to all our favorite arguments.
Texas is one of the easiest states to homeschool in, so there's really nothing your parents will need to do - no lesson plans, no required testing. Check out the HSLDA website for legal specifics and even more "ammo" about homeschooling high school and going to college.
Best wishes!

don't listen to all these people saying that you will miss your friends. half of them don't really know what they are talking about!!! really your relationship with others depends on you. if you make time to spend with your friends then you'll have a good social life!! People told me the same thing but im doing it any way and i love it. its just the same as summer because in summer you have to stay in contact with your friends and do things. I go to football games still we go to the movies together and we work together. I'm 16 so i have had 16 years to talk to people and make friends!!! and personally you will learn more at home because when you are in school you have so much drama going on that some times it makes it hard to focus. when you are at home your mind is clear and it is so much easier!!! so if that is what you want to do then go for it. and i don't know about schools in Texas but i am using James Madison High School and i have already talked to the admissions office to the University that i plan on attending and they say that it is fine!!! so call the school you want to go to and see what they think!! and some schools like home schooled students because they are self motivated so do some research on it and find all the good points and then take it all to your dad that's what i did with my mom!!! Good Luck

Just run a search for "home schooing" "high school" Texas and you'll get plenty of information. Make sure you research this thoroughly before making a decision. You'll want to know whether this is independent study or if parental assistance/participation is required; how other needs besides academic (gym, elective courses, etc.) are addressed; what kind of graduation you would have; what kind of diploma you'd get...there is a lot to consider. Good luck! :-)

Going to high school blows, no question and sometimes the social aspect of it seems like the hardest thing you could go through. But the old adage "that which does not kill us makes us stronger" really is true. In the real world, you can't run away from your problems and ultimately be successful in life. When you're older, if you don't like your job you can't just tell your boss that you will be working from home - forever. Life just doesn't work that way. Stay in school and learn the lessons that your teachers give you and that life gives you.

I have met about 10 individuals who were home-schooled in my life and all were sadly lacking in social skills. I would say it's not a matter of learning schoolwork but a matter of learning to work, live and play with others that is the greatest reason to go to school.

You can try, but you will miss your friends and your social life will be ruined. Oh yeah, and also, no P.E. no Music, Art, etc., no sitting with friends at lunch. It's better to be socialized than to be home schooled. Believe me, I have two friends who are in home school.
