It sounds like he took his oath of enlistment, so he's definitely in. I would tell him to stay safe, concentrate on the training and not worry about anything else. I would write him lots of letters and keep encouraging him. Basic training is only for a few months, so it's not good bye forever. Oh, don't forget to thank him for his willingness to serve his country. He's made a very honorable decision and I know he would appreciate the thanks.

In WW2 when men went off to war there used to be a song which Went "wish me luck as you wave me goodbye .
Another was.
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile smile smile.
While there's a lucifer to light your fag smile boy thats the style.
What's the use of worrying it never was worthwhile.
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile smile smile.
Another was Keep the home fires burning for my returning.
The unfortunate part about war is some lives are lost they die as heroes.
So others may have freedom .
Many return home and they also are heroes.
Take care!

You NEVER say good bye. Instead, you should say "see you later". "Stay safe", "I'll keep in touch", "Thank you for what you're doing" and many other things are all very appropriate comments too. Don't be sad for him, be proud of him. He's made a very mature decision and one I'm sure he's proud of. Give him the respect and love he deserves. Just wish him the best and tell him to come home safe.

There is no way he would know where he's going to be stationed so cross that bridge if you ever get to it. He's not even sure if he'll be accepted into the Marines or be able to complete training-it sounds like he just wants some attention from you.
