Do the letters "W" and "T" stand for something in another language? I don't know much about digital cameras but my kids say these letters are always used for the zoom on their cameras.

The W stands for "wide angle" and the T for "telephoto". If you compare it to a standard 35 mil. camera, there is a mid point that will give approx. the same view size as a 35 with a 50 mil. lens. Most less expensive ( non-removable lens ) view cameras have a range of about the equivalent of a 35 mil. wide angle lens to a 135 mil. telephoto lens. Of course, with an SLR camera this doesn't really exist as you can use all kinds of lenses and the auto zoom feature. My most used lens on my Pentax for example, ( I do a lot of macro work ) is an 18 to a 55 mil. zoom lens. That is ultra wide angle and not much greater than a standard 50 mil. as a telephoto.

W stands for Wide zoom
T stands for Telephoto zoom

Wideangle means you zoom out of the subject and includes the sorrounding on the picture you are taking. This is good when taking fields pictures.

Telephoto means you zoom on the subject only, like the face of a child.

This is being explained in simple terms.

The W is WIDE for Wide Angle which is retracting the lens.

The T is TELEPHOTO, which is zooming the lens out.
