It was the model name of the M-16 when it was first placed into service in the military. After the name changed to M-16, AR-15 was designated for civilian semi-automatic rifles. M stands for model, not military.

The AR-15 is to the M-16 what the MAK-90 is to the AK47.
Many companies make AR-15's and M-16's. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic version of the M-16 (select fire fully auto or burst, semi and safe).
I have owned many AR-15's of various brands, as well as have carried many M-16's made by different companies. There are sub designations such as A1, A2, A3, A4 (M-4) as well, denoting certian features as the weapons designs have been improved or changed.
Some of the companies that make the rifles are Colt, ArmaLite, FN, General Electric, Eagle Arms...

Armalite Corp. developed a automatic weapon based on Col.Stoner's work which they sold to Colt. This design with modifications was sold to the Army which accepted it as the M 16. And yes there was a M 15 but it didn't work out. Colt sell semi-auto rifles as the AR15.

The AR-15 is basically a civilian model of the M-16. It has the same general configuration, but is offered in semi-automatic only.

The AR-15 is a lightweight, magazine-fed, autoloading centerfire rifle designed by Eugene Stoner of the ArmaLite corporation who developed it as a smaller-caliber version of the AR-10.

It's a civilian version of the M-16. It's semi-auto ( it will fire one round evey time you pull the trigger.) It takes a .223 cal(5.56x45mm) round, although a common variation takes a .308cal (7.62x51mm). very accurate and low recoil it is an excellent varmint/sporting rifle.
