In most cases I would recomend POWER which would be the 12 guage. But coming from an area where shotgunning deer is the only way we can hunt, for the beginner like your self I would say get the 20 guage.

The recoil will not scare you, and in the history of deerr hunting ( between the two 20 & 12 guage) there have been MORE deer killed with the 20 than the 12. One reason is the fact the 20 is so much lighter than the 12, so MORE ppl carry it.

For deer get a 12 gauge shotgun. More power and penetration. 20 gauge not enuff power on the average. i want to kill the animal not let him suffer. The best staring gun is a single shot 12gauge 30"barrel for accuracy. The safest guns are single shot and they are the most powerful. Good hunting.

You will be deer hunting so don't get a shotgun. Since it's your first time, killing one with a shotgun slug will be pretty difficult. I'd go with either a .270 or a handy 30-30 for your first time. The 30-30 is more versatile and simple to use. Also, a 30-.06 is a good choice

How petite are you, K-K? Can you handle a 12 gauge? Perhaps you should start with a 20 gauge and work up.

I gave my 14 year old nephew a .44 Magnum carbine for his first deer rifle.

If you are determined to use a shotgun, I highly recommend the Remington Model 870...

But if you're willing to give them a chance, I think in the long run, for deer hunting, you will be much happier with a rifle. One of my favorite rifles and my absolute favorite for short range(under 150yds) deer hunting is the Marlin 336C 30-30...

You can take a look at http://www.gunbroker.com , use, search..When you narrow it down to a few you like, go to a gunshow/shop and try them out..You want to make sure you like the way the rifle/shotgun feels against your shoulder..

if you have to use a shotgun get the 12. but if you can hunt with rifle, get a rifle. You would have a better chance of killing a deer with a $59 mosin nagant rifle than with a $300 870 shotgun.

I agree w/Chris. As for brands, I would go with remington or mossberg. They make a slug barrel with rifle sights or tapped for scope. This has increased distance a deer can be taken w/slug out to about 150 yards.

For deer hunting....go with a .243 Its good ,reliable and the ammo is fairly cheap. There is also minimal kick and great accuracy.

Shotgun for deer hunting??? I think not. Try a bow...it's way more fun and more challenging.
