You should always turn to look in your blind spots, because there have been a lot of accidents caused from people not doing this. Also, use your indicator. How are other drivers supposed to know your intentions if you don't?

Because I ride a motorcycle I do both (turn head and check mirrors). Too may time I have seen the other driver and they haven't seen me. So I would say that it would safe to do both. Unless you drive a Tractor Trailer then you just have the mirrors to use but those are much bigger and they have spot mirrors as well.

When driving anywhere you go, it is always important to check all mirrors, all spots that you can't see and then make sure you are relevant to change lanes in the clear. It doesn't take you a long time to look around you, it's just that fraction of a second that could put you in danger.

Easy answer. I'm a driving examiner, and you will get docked points if you dont. It is unsafe to change lanes without checking over your shoulder.
Good example is the road test I was on recently. We were driving down the road, in front of us was a motorcycle. Someone beside him signaled, then changed lanes immediately. He almost mowed down the motorcycle driver. I believe the motorcycle was in his blind spot, and if he would have done a head check, he would have seen the motorcyclist and there wouldnt have been a near miss.

I check all mirrors and then turn to look. I also lean up in the seat so I have a better view in the mirror when it's a difficult merge.

I always turn and look. It's what I learned to do in drivers' ed class before I got my license, and it's the only way to be sure it is safe to change lanes.

It depends. I drive the exact same route each day (40 miles each way). There are certain areas that are clear sailing and I use only my mirrors. There are two areas that are merges, and real bears. I turn totally around for those.

My mirrors get bumped by people all the time while I'm parked so I always turn my head and hardly ever use the mirrors.

The mirrors move when they are bumped.
