Allow me to give you some practical information. It sounds from your narrative above that you already reported the event to the police and a report was made, and you have it. So I'll continue from there.

Domestic violence these days is something that has changed the way police do business in the field. Most progressive departments (I'm sure Houston is one) are required to make an arrest on scene if there is physical evidence of the violence, etc. but for some reason, that didn't happen in your case.

If the merits of the case are such that there's enough evidence to prosecute successfully, then your next step should be to recontact the domestic violance unit of the police department and say you want to press charges. If there's something wrong with the case, they are in a good position to explain why.

Even though there is a statute of limitations of at least one year, you have to consider the disadvantage to yourself for waiting. One of the first things that has to be explained if you wait a few months or a year before expressing an interest in pressing a complaint, is 'why did you wait this long'. It may be thought that you did not think of yourself as a victim...or victim enough...to press charges right after it happened, and may want to do it now for revenge because of some recent event. This can be destructive to any case you may have had in the beginning. You must decide early on, where to do you want to go with this case and what do you hope to get from it.

So it's not entirely and issue of how long do you have, but rather how credible will you seem when you make that decision. The longer the wait, the more credibiltiy may diminish.

Why are you waiting? If it happens again you might not be around to wonder how long it takes to press charges.

If you're going to file a report, you should do it as soon as possible to be sure the details you report are accurate. Don't wait.

Why are you not calling the local police department for this question? Are you one of those he beats me but loves me types? if you are I recommend a good counselor for you and him.

Leave the abusive jerk. Why do men do that to women? I never understood the mentality of anyone who could do that to anyone, least of all to someone they profess to love!!!!
