Standing erect puts our anus squarely between our legs, where it cannot dry and cleanse itself.
As others have said, animals do tend to rub their butts on things when they feel irritation, so we aren't alone.
If you plan on rubbing your butt on the carpet, you might have another problem to deal with!

When humans are healthy we don't have to wipe. Most animals in the wild are supposed to have a fairly consistent diet of natural foods. They don't need to wipe because evacuating the bowels isn't messy like it is with humans. We have messy bowel movements because we have unnatural diets that are too varied and contain too much processed food and refined sugar. Too much of the crap in our food isn't even nutritional, so the body just gets rid of what it doesn't turn into fat.
However, we aren't the only animals that wipe. Cats always do (they just don't use paper), monkeys and other primates use their hands in zoos, but I don't know if this is to wipe or to get ammunition to throw at humans. And some dogs wipe themselves on the ground (or carpet) and some clean the way cats do. Maybe they learned from us, or maybe they have to because of the processed food we give them. There are other scenarios among animals which seem to imply alternative explanations. For example, if you've ever watched a horse with diarrhea evacuate its bowels, your looming inquiry into derrier wiping evolves to "Why bother?" Usually followed by the expletive "Wheeeeeew!" and the polite command statement "Butch, go get me a fire hose will you?" I don't think bears wipe though - just an observation.

Because your MOTHER taught you to
besides being smelly you would get very uncomfortable and sore
I know my dog is always cleaning himself and I'm sure there are other animals that wipe in other ways mothers clean their young

How do you know we are? You need to research the animal kingdom and bit more.
We cleanse ourselves because society dislikes personal body odor. Not cleansing also causes a rash in that area.
If you want to stop, be my guest. It would save you money.

We have toilet paper and hands with thumbs to use it.
Other animals wipe too sometimes, but not like us.

I've seen a two-legged dog wipe it's anus after doing it's buisness, so re-think your statement.

Dogs and cats lick it clean.. We use paper. If you never wiped your A**, it would get inflamed and infected.
