I'm sorry, but what the hell kind of endodontist do you have? You should not have gone through any "hurt" not alone suffer from last year. Maybe two days at the most is all it should have hurt. You know something is definitely wrong with the procedure. If he has done something wrong there is a possibility that you could loose the tooth but I would recommend another dentist. To let you go on like that is unreal. If the tooth did crack (which might be a possibility due to a thin tooth wall) an ex-ray will show that and something needs to be done before infection sets in. If it still hurts and is sensitive to hot and cold then he did not remove all of the nerve which he was supposed to do. The only way now is either to open the tooth again which could crack it if it is not already, and get the rest of the nerve, or sorry, but to pull the tooth.
If the tooth is cracked, there is that possibility that when you chew on something you will "shatter" the tooth. There is also a possibility that once the tooth is "fixed" from it's original problem, it can be "rebuilt". I have an eye tooth which is 10% mine and 90% bondo(as I call it). It's actually better and stronger than mine was although they suggested a "cap" for it.

The pint of a root canal is to remove the nerve. If you feel pain there are two reasons: one it's not that tooth that hurts, it's the surrounding teeth and there is an infection: two the dentist didn't get all the nerve out. You don't have to lose your tooth. There are other options. See a different dentist

"Might" be cracked? I sure hope he took an x-ray! If it can't be fixed, you can look into getting an implant, although it's very spendy and most insurance doesn't cover it (plus, it's a very lengthy process involving a lot of visits to the oral surgeon or periodontist).

See another endontist. You should not be having pain. I have more root canals than not in my mouth and they are all great.
