Whenever I see the Americans on TV that gather outside prisons, (particularly it seems in Florida) w. placards and in a state of agitated excitement for an imminent execution I can't help thinking that many of them seem to behave as if they are jealous of the killer. They often look as though they would love to be able to do what he did but are missing the last piece of pathological psychology to do it themselves. Have there been any studies w. findings and conclusions on the people who go out of their way to attend these executions?

Begoner is right - it's bloodlust.
Look at TV, games, etc. It's all around us. Oh, no more public hangings? We'll just watch some gory crap at the theatre. It will fulfill our hunger.
What causes it ? Now that is a good question. I've seen a man from an upstanding Christian home commit murder.
The devil is in each of us.
What causes it? Who the heck knows?
Interesting factoid: men who watch pornography become more sexually agressive immediately after the viewing.
Imagine what snuff films will do to a person?
Who is it Gavin Rossdale sang "There's No Sex in Violence." Well, there is violence in sex however.
Somethin to chew on.

Lets turn that around, why in your question did you say not one thing about the victims of the crimes? Maybe these people are family and friends and people who care about victim's rights? Why don't you care about the rights of the victims rather than the spectacle of the execution? Have you ever contemplated how scared these people were as their lives were being stolen from them?

I'm pretty sure it's not just Americans who do that. Throughout history, executions were held in public for all to see. For some reason, human nature leads some people to be excited to witness these kind of things. It's sick but true.

Interesting viewpoint. I think some people can't see paying to house a convict, so they believe that death is the very best way to rid society of the vermin. And sometimes, they can't wait.

If my daughter was murdered and I was invited to watch the execution of her killer--I would be there--to see him die--in such a more humane way--why do others come? Maybe morbid ??--Politics and curiosity, I supose

Mainly so they can say that I was at so-so's execution.

Most of the executed are forgotten anyway. These attendees are looking for 15 minutes of fame.

I doubt that is the motivation behind it. I think they are just happy to see somebody getting killed -- bloodlust taken to an abhorrent extreme, where people think that others deserve to die, and are happy to see them do it.
