He became a Buddha by contemplating on what life is all about and came to realize this Truth. He is then called a Buddha who simply means an enlightened being who rediscovered the Truth that was lost to mankind in millinmum past. There were millions of Buddha before him within this great trichiliocosm. And within the so called auspicious aeon, we have been told, there were six Buddhas before him. A Buddha only appear in the world during a time when his teaching has totally disappear from mankind and when the human race is ready to accept and understand his re-discovery of this Truth.
This has been a short answer.

I'll tell you the basics. He is not and never claimed to be a deity. He was not fat (the fat Buddha represents happiness). To be a Buddha you have to be free from anger, wants, and some other stuff I can't think of.
Some people believe that Jesus, during his early adulthood, went to India and was who Buddhist believe was the Buddha.

Siddhartha Gautama was born a prince, saw the issues of suffering, life, and death, and sought to overcome suffering. He left wife and child and, after years of trying various teachers and paths, he engaged himself fully into turning inward and became enlightened about the real nature of himself and everything. He then taught a set of concepts that were to be used as tools to get to the same experience (the concepts should never be considered Truth). His teachings (e.g. 4 noble truths, 8-fold path, dependent origination, etc.) were written down (e.g. sutras) by his followers. Buddhism spread to various countries, mixing with local religions to form a new flavor of Buddhism. Different major sects exist with those under the Mahayana ('Greater Vehicle') category claiming additional teachings of the Buddha being kept away until humans were ready. Anyway, no-one really becomes a Buddha; our real nature is as it is; it's just that we don't know what we really are (we think we're this body and individual). When we realize it, we are then awake and can be called a Buddha (a very very rough analogy is the Matrix movie where people are really in pods and projected into a contrived, illusory world where they think they are). As far as lineages, again, anyone can be a Buddha. But certain sects have lineage charts that trace their teachers back to the original Buddha and they all differ, of course. Zen uses its lineage chart to trace itself back to the historical buddha; note that some of those included in the chart are not considered 100% accurate. But it doesn't matter because it's to be used as a TOOL, not nit-picked for literal accuracy. We used to recite the lineage but i can't remember what the heck it's called and where I can find it. Dunno if this is what you're looking for: http://www.angelfire.com/realm/bodhisattva/zen_ancestors.html

I suggest you poke your nose into some books. Favorably historical books if you want to know how he lived and what he did and things. You could look up a biography on the internet. There is so much information on Buddha and Buddhism on the internet, you can't even imagine it. There are plenty of websites. If you are looking into the religion, I would recommend http://www.religioustolerance.com

Buddha's just a guy who figured out how to live a good life.
You'd be best off talking to a Buddhist in your community.

Sorry, some of these questions make me realize how little I actually do know - about any given subject! All I know about buddah is that he is supposed to have a round belly that people are supposed to rub for good luck.
But, I'm quite sure that there is a whole lot more to him than that!

There have been very few people who we could consider to be wise beyond the level of a genius. Buddha was such a person. I strongly encourage you to learn more about his teachings. Peace.

He was, according to Buddhist tradition, an Indian Prince named Gautama Siddartha.
After seeing old age, sickness and death as a young man, he resolved to resign his kingdom and meditate on the nature of human existence until he found a solution to the problem of human suffering. The result was the doctrine we know as Buddhism.
