Overrated would indicate that something was found not too have the value that was advertised. A movie that got good ratings and actually sucked? That movie would have been overrated. Sex before you're 16 years old? Once you get it done to you and you find yourself dirty and not satisfied...you will see that underage sex was overrated. Does that help?

Over-rated means that it's not as important as people might think. I'll use myself as an example:
People say that mathematics play a very important role in every day live, but for me that is a highly over-rated assessment.
In other words, I don't work at a job where math is extremely important, so it is not as essential to me as it would be if I were in another line of work.
I'm sure that others will think of better examples, but simply put, over-rated means that something is assigned greater value than it is actually worth.

Overrated means that something is made out to be something more than it is. For example, a particular band may be considered overrated because they have popular songs that get stuck in your head but they're nothing special musically.

Kobe Bryant is an overrated basketball player. Meaning, people give him too much credit but do not actually deserve it. Or, When some people think that someone is good at something but actually is not.

To say that something is overrated is to suggest both that many people think something is very good, and that those people are wrong.

Over-rated means poeple give it more credit then it deserves. For Example. If everyone is talking about how great a movie is and then you go see it and you hate it..you might say man that movie was way overrated...

For example, let's say an NFL team goes out and say their first round draft choice is the best in college football, and the NFL team is already talking like he is the best player aroundin professional football, although he has yet to prove himself playing in the NFL. This player is said to be overrated.

Overrated is the same as overrate it is to regard somebody as better or more capable, or something as greater, than is in fact the case
eg:wheather to get overrated is to get more then expected or something that is capable to your hands from someone else
