The only animals i have ever purchased were farm animals, horses, goats, chickens and the like. For my domesticated animals I usually take in strays. My last stray was a very young female kitten. I finally named her "GG" short for "good girl".

Anywhere from 2 weeks to about 2 months is the longest. Don't like giving any old name. And sometimes I will change it.

When I first got my kitty, i called him kitty-kitty for about a month then I finally saw how his personality was and knew the right name for him - Sam. He is a Sam - short for Sammy. I thought of so many and then asked him and saw he was happy with it and called him that since. I like the short one syllable name, when he does something wrong I can just yell "SAM", and he knows right away. He is my baby and he can't stand to be without me. He has to be in every room or close to me. When I go into the bathroom and shut the door he is there waiting by the door when I come out. As you can tell I am an animal lover to. I have three dogs also and it took time to name them too. I have Sadie, Zowie and Xyila - I call her Xyilagirl. She was my first and is very special to me and keeps the other two dogs in line.

It usually takes me a few days to pick a basic name... but as the animal grows so does the name.
One of our most recent additions is a teensy calico. This kitten was claimed by my daughters (ages 9 and 10) who agreed on Daisy. My 11 yo son hated the name with a passion because she's a calico and not a yellow cat lol. He got into the habit of calling her "Ittyist Bittiest Kittiest" hehee so that's her primary name now.
I have a bob-tailed male tabby I named Rogue. He also goes by Buddy and Stubby-tale (sometimes tubby-tail lol). But he only comes to me when I "sing" his name (kinda yodel-like).

WE name our new pet after about 2 seconds. It makes sense to wait a few weeks like you say, but we like to start training it right away. We have a hard time training with out a name.

I was 10 when I got my first pet, and I was so excited that I didn;t know what to name him. I tried heaps of things ec Tiger, Patch, Garfield... All the while my mum was calling him Kitty, eventually thats the only thing he responded to, so thats his names. I call him Kitta as a nickname.
My second cat is only 2, it took me about a week to name her Flame (she's ginger and a little hellion). I call her Flay or Little Girl as nicknames, dad calls her Flamebo.

With my bird, I knew right away. With 3 of my 4 goldens I knew before I got them and the names fit perfectly. This last one took a couple days but I saw mason jars sitting on my shelf in the basement and decided to call him Mason.

For a kittycat: I scrutinize the kitty for two or three days, and see what name suggests itself to me. Then I ask the kitty if he likes it.
For a dog: heck, you can have the name picked out before the animal. Dogs will answer to anything you like.

I usually find a name the same day...that way they learn their name quickly. If their personality reveals itself to be different than the name, I add a nickname and eventually convert the name over to the more suitable one. eg: my cat, originally called 'nina' (referring to the Spanish term for 'little girl'..has become 'El Nina'....referring to the apocalyptic and potentially disastrous chaos inflicted upon the earth by climate change. She's still cute though...he he.

Good Idea, but try a few names out on the animal first, if he comes to you when you call a name, then thats his name,! you have to guess the animals name, he knows what it is you just have to find out what it is .
