It is not a dumb question. Everyone has a gag reflex some are worse than others. One possible solution is using a washcloth another just set the brush lightly on the back of your tongue and gently go toward the tip of your tongue.

The only dumb question is the one not asked. Sorry, I just had to fall back on that old cliche.

SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM:
If you are gagging or throwing up that should be a sign that you are going too far back. Move forward a little bit. The back of your tongue that they are talking about lies just below your soft palate.

Don't know what I mean? Put the tip of your tongue straight to the top of your mouth. Does it feel hard? Move your tongue back a little bit. Does it feel soft? That is your soft palate. Brush as far back as that point. No further.

That's problematic, I know. Go as far back as you can.

You can also get a tongue scraper that doesn't seem to trigger the gag reflex as strongly. Or use a big soup spoon.

I think that's a waste of time. It will not reduce the bacteria population significantly, and they grow back quickly. Better practice is to brush the teeth thoroughly (to remove plaque and food particles) and also the gum line (the exercise keeps it healty).

Just like my sister who is deathly afraid of gagging for whatever reason.
so just brush as far as you can, or train yourself not to gag. I never gag. I can stick my hand down my throat as far as it can fit.

Just brush as far back as you can. You definately aren't supposed to make yourself throw up.

Just brush what you can get to and gargle with mouthwash will take care of the rest.
