If you want something formal the best advice I can give is sit with your back straight....not slumped over like you've been working non stop for three days. You would be surprised at how much on an improvement in posture translates into the photograph. It will also help elongate the neck (a problem area for folks over 30.) When you sit, slightly turn a shoulder towards the camera (doesn't matter which one). This gives a little depth to the photo and takes it out of the mug shot category. Try tilting the top of the head slightly to one side (just a little...say 1/2 inch). Look square at the camera so you appear "camera aware". This makes for a better visual connection between you and the person looking at the photo.

If you are asked to turn your head far to one side and then look at the camera this will pull your eyes to the corners....I find this very unflattering and it makes you look "shifty".

Now for the informal portrait. Take all of the above and toss it out the window. The idea is to appear relaxed and comfortable. A few suggestions would be:

curled up in an over sized chair reading a book
in a hammock in the garden
at the playground
in a pile of leaves during the Fall
on a bench in the park

The key is making the subject relax and enjoy the moment.

When posing for a picture try to have something in your hands, it will help take your mind off of the camera.

whatever makes you comfortable and makes you feel beautiful. That's an individual thing. Even the most beautiful models take mutiple poses before the best one is chosen. Just watch the girls on America's Next Top Model

Always keep both eyes square into the camera. Turn a little bit, maybe even 45 degree angle and then turn that head directly to the camera. Flattering. :)
