This is kind of a rant...but here I go....I don't understand why people got so behind the soldiers once the "War on Terror" started?!? I spent the first 17 years of my life outside of the United States while my dad served our country. I had a great time and I'm not complaining about that but no one seemed to care before the war...I never saw "Support the Troops" bumper stickers. While I understand being stationed overseas isn't the same as being deployed to a war zone...it's just as hard. My parents grew up in the same town their whole lives and then spent 20 years away from our families and friends! Didn't people think that was important! The military is needed in other places besides the US and Iraq. I don't know if people just don't know that people go overseas to places other then Iraq or if they just don't care???

To everything there is a season - you are lucky there is appreciation of the troops now. But what about expressing appreciation for all the police officers on duty every day? teachers putting up with incredible challenges day-in day-out in the most formative years of their charges lives, what about over-worked, underpaid nurses? what about....I could go on for ever. The point is, the military HELPS make a society; it is not the whole deal, just a part, so while it is special , it is special in the same way a myriad of other hard-working dedicated professionals are also special, and just as essential to a functioning society.

Support Our Troops stickers were around the first time we fought with SaDam... people want to make sure that our soldiers are never treated the way they were after coming home from vietnam. And it's not that people don't know or care, that our military is spead all over the world....it is more that they want to make sure our troops in war zones get the respect they deserve....Your dad and your family sacrificed alot as do all military people....if not for them, the world would not be as safe as it is....try not to let the rally for support now discourage you in the fact that sacrifices have always been made. :)

I'm pretty sure that most people know there are many American military bases in different parts of the world. Most people have the belief that soldiers stationed at, say, Rammstein in Germany have a less likely chance of being killed in combat than soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan. I'm not necessarily saying it's right, but more people "support our troops" when they are facing a high likelihood of being killed.

Not that it's justified, but I think a lot of people decide that people who enlist in the military during peacetime know what to expect: they'll be deployed for a certain amount of time, the pay will suck, but they'll recieve government benefits (housing, medical care, etc.) and they enter into that agreement knowing what to expect. During wartime, people are faced with the prospect of death-one they may not have considered when they signed up. In addition, soldiers who are stationed in war zones don't have the benefit of having their families there with them.

We shouldn't support people who join up in the military to be killers-for-hire in the first place, much less when they are actually deployed in a situation in which they will have to kill innocent people defending their country against foreign aggressors. There should be no "support the troops" bumper stickers at all.

I think people forget about it because they don't constantly see it on the news. We should always be thankful for those serving in our military and the sacrifices they (and their families) make. Thanks for pointing it out.

i hate it when ppl don't support our troops and say that they are doing bad stuff in the country they are occupying, if it weren't for our troops, we wouldn't have such a great country, it's cuz of them that we're here! that's why we're so powerful....and if ppl think that our troops are bad, then they should know that they are doing their job....i really believe in what u said
