Okay, so I'm 14. I'm really into coffee, and I like the taste and smell of it a lot. The thing is, my parents are constantly disapproving. I mean, it's not like it's alcohol. And, I have a lot of friends who drink it. Should I discontinue drinking it?

I've been drinking coffee since I was young, and the only bad thing is that I'm addicted to caffeine. That's probably why your parents disapprove. Caffeine can also stunt your growth and, I think, deplete calcium from your bones. I recommend cutting out most of the caffeine and switching to decaf, and maybe even take multivitamins or Tums for the calcium. Tell your parents of your intent to compromise with them, and hopefully they'll respect your mature approach to drinking coffee like the grownups do.

At 14, there are lots of things worse to be drinking.

The question I would want to know as a parent is, are you getting your sleep at night. If you drink a cuppa in the evening, do you have trouble going to sleep?

My Dad came from the Cajun part of Louisiana, and I think they start drinking coffee about the time they are weaned.

The problem with coffee is it could make you feel jittery and keep you awake at night. If you do drink it have it in the morning and no more then a cup per day. Make sure at your age to mostly drink milk, fruit juices and plenty of water.

On occasion, drinking coffee is fine.

Caffeine is addictive so do not drink too much. It can effect your heart beat so be careful. If you are concerned about the caffeine, then order decaf most of the time and regular on occasion.

They are worried because coffee contains high amounts of caffiene, and can become addictive. Also, it has been shown to slow growth. But I think as long as you drink it in moderation, you shouldnt have any problems.

You're not too young. It's not the best thing in the world for you to do, but if you can drink Mountain Dew or Dr. Pepper, what's the diff? They all have caffeine.
