In October my boyfriend and I are going to New Orleans. He usually does all of the planning of places to go, things to do and see, but i said that this time i would sort it out and make the plans... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..and any tips and advice. We enjoy eating out, history, fun/silly stuff... theatre, going out for drinks in chilled out bars, we are out going and like to get the most out of a place we visit and have lots of energy to fit in a lot of things, staying for four days before going to Vegas.. ( therefor we aren't interested in going to casinos in N.O as we will do that in Vegas.
Thank you..

New Orleans is one of my very favorite U.S. cities -- if you've never been, you're in for a treat!

One thing you must do is take a walking tour with Robert Florence's company, Historic Walking Tours. http://www.tourneworleans.com/ Robert gets the facts right while still being incredibly entertaining, and I swear there's nothing he doesn't know about the city. He's an expert on the city's cemeteries, and really knows how to spin a good yarn. You won't regret spending a few hours doing this, whether you choose one of the architectural history tours of the French Quarter or the Garden District or the "Haunted New Orleans" tour. Don't waste time or money on any other tour company.

Take the ferry to Algiers and tour Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World; see how Mardi Gras floats are made. Kind of silly, but neat.

Have a drink at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone. It's not chilled out, but it spins, and how cool is that?!

My favorite chilled out bar is Vic's Kangaroo Cafe, in the Warehouse District http://www.satchmo.com/vics/. And, they make a really great hurricane from real juice. Don't mess with those powdered mixes you'll find on Bourbon Street.

Mid-City Lanes Rock n' Bowl is also a great place to hang out and catch good music: http://www.rockandbowl.com/

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art is an outpost of The Smithsonian and usually has really interesting outsider and folk art exhibits: http://www.ogdenmuseum.org

For food, there's so much good stuff, but my favorites are
Herbsaint http://herbsaint.com/ It's the one place I'd call a MUST- the food is divine, and really reasonably priced.

Central Grocery, 923 Decatur Street, for the muffalettas

Southern Candymakers: http://www.southerncandymakers.com
Several locations in the French Quarter & French Market area. Fabulous chocolates and the best pralines.

The places you should visit are and how much time should be allowed:

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas (1 day)
Audubon Zoo (1 day)
Cafe Du Monde (1 hour) (this one is a must) :))
Evergreen Plantation & Swamp tour (1/2 day or more) Call 888-858-6877 for info
French Quarter Walking Tour Call (504)523-3939 (2 hours)

Now for the top Resturaunts you can visit:
Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon

However note that some of this may have changed since the Hurricane.
Also make sure you take a ride on the Streetcars tickets are only $5 for a day-long pass.

my boyfriend is from Michgan.. He moved down in October when i met him. I'm from here.. and we always go on tours.. he loves it.. and its alot of fun for me too since.. i've never done any .. or never thought to do any since i'm a local.

For Valentines day i treated him to a River Boat cruise on the Mississippi.. name of the boat was Natches.. its a 2 hour tour you can pick to go in the afternoon or night. with a lunch or dinner.. they also have a local jazz band .. it was Great.. i'd highly recommend it.

We've also been on the Haunted History Tour .. a walk through the french quarter while being told the tales and experiences of all the hauntings.. that one was cool. theres also a Garden District tour .. you get to view all the beautiful mansons .. and hear about celebrities like John Goodman, Trent Reznor .. Anne Rice.. both of those were provided by a French Quarter Shop called ..Reverend Zombies Voodoo Shop their webpage is http://hauntedhistorytours.com/ i'd highly recommend anything by them.. cemetary tour too .. you can go rub Marie Laveaux's tomb heh.

you could also do a Plantation tour.. i've always wanted to go on one but haven't yet..

the tours are cheap.. and really worth doing.. about 7$ - 20$ depending on what you pick.

if you go to neworleans.com click on 'see and do' in green. then under it is 'tours and attractions' a big list of tours should pop up. i'd call to make any reservations just to be safe.. instead of doing it online. you can also try "101 cool things"

have fun!

Is there an Old Orlando? Reread your question. Don't you mean New Orleans?
