Don't you feel tipping is getting out of hand?? It seems like everyone expects a tip these days. Hey, I got an idea. The next time you are pulled over by a cop, why don't you leave him a 15% tip for doing such a great job???

sounds like you've never worked in a restaurant or as a barista, with people being super demanding and rude for no reason except they think that they're better than you. I'm sorry, but i was a server for a long time and same attitude. because your not doing it your self. that's why. we can start building the tip in like Europe or Japan, then you'd have to pay. and people who worked there would be making a decent living. since most of them are college students who'll have to help support you when you retire. nice attitude

I love Starbucks and if I have change I will give a tip. Every time I have went to Starbucks I have been given very good service. Its apparent to me that you have never worked in this type of environment. Its not a high paying job. Comparing Doctors to a coffee bar worker is apples and oranges. If I get good service I leave a good tip. I don't think the worker ask you for a tip, so its your choice if you want to give one. I even tip my hairdresser. Its just my way of saying Thank you, for doing a good job. Just because the price of coffee is high does not mean the employees are getting paid like a Doctor.

I think Starbucks coffee is swill. It's burnt-tasting and nasty.

But all the coffee kiosks of any brand have tip jars right under where they hand the money back to you. Clever placement.

If you buy a starbucks for $3.00 each workday, that's $720 a year from your pocket to theirs. Lots for java.

Um, I wouldn't try tipping a cop. May get taken the wrong way.

Back to your question. They are probably paid the minimum wage and in circumstances like this I tip because I feel I've been lucky and they are trying to be. Do I like it? No but that's the way minimum wage or near minimum wage salaries can be addressed when you interact with people earning them. I guess another question would be is how much does Starbucks "share the wealth" with their employees.

Starbucks isn't really a tipping place. It's just a coffee shop and they only serve you for less than a minute before moving onto the next customer. It's not as if it's a great restaurant where they serve you for over an hour and always check on your meal etc. No, don't tip at Starbucks. It's overpriced anyway.

How much does a Starbucks employee get paid? Minimum wage? If so, it won't hurt you one bit to put a buck in the jar. Geesh. How much are you paying for the coffee anyway?

As for the policeman, he may appreciate a tip now and then. He/she probably gets lots of complaints unless they are helping you rather than writing a ticket.

And, you may be right about tips. Which brings up a living wage... a totally different question for Yahoo Answers!

You shouldn't. They make an appropriate wage and have better health insurance than some of the customers! (Starbucks)They even pay tuition. There is very minimal service involved, and this is certainly not necessary. What gets me is that the tip jar is at the cashiers for ringing you up. They don't even prepare the drinks! If they prepared the drinks, and served you, like at a coffee bar, that would be different. I never leave a tip for my $4.30 mocha at Starbucks. We already pay out the nose, but it is good stuff! When will I tip them? When the cashiers bring it out to me in the car, instead of making me fidget in line behind the customers they are having non-sensical conversations with to get their tips instead of waiting on me. :)

There is no way I would leave a tip at Starbucks. What is the difference in getting a cup of coffee there and getting a cup at a drive thru? Besides the rediculous price. They dont make any less per hour than anyone who works in a convenience store or a fast food restaurant. Do they get tips? NO!!!

I agree with everyone and have been pondering the same question. Why is it the customer has to pay the restaurants employees? It seems like everywhere you go, someone is expecting a tip. I am sooo tired of tipping! Don't you really love it when you go to a restaurant and they automatically add in the "15% gratuity?"

You don't. I seriously think that some people do not deserve a tip. Kind of like when you go to the a restaurant for take out and they expect you to tip them just because they moved the food to the counter.

hehehehe... I hear what you're saying.

I will tip coffee shop employees if I'm a regular there and get to know them. A lot of the time, these are students working part time while attending classes and since I know what it's like to be a "starving student," I will leave a small tip on occasion for the ones who I like.
