Why can't christians accept... Carbon dating proves the bible lies? Ie proves the world older then 5000 years.

If proof can be found the earth is older then the bible says... thats proof its not perfect, therefore no god...

Carbon dating proves the world is millions of years old

To morons like G girl its saying that if the bible says

The world is four thousand and something years old and the bible is perfect and gods words.

Then a scientific mathematical process shows the world is millions of years old...

Clearly all christiains are wrong as their bible is wrong and if its evidence of a god that must be perfect then clearly thats false so a god cant exist therefore

Why do christins operate on clearyly did proved faith and not accept reality proved right by maths and equipment?

I love fools like wisdom below...
quote

why we humans have love and reason, when animals dont, or, how to create a human being, out of nothing (or dust).

They have... human love is biochemistry to get human adults to stay bonded to help raise a kid thats not fully capable of looking after itself for a decade and a half...

Pretty much due to the size of human brains.

Ohter animals have other features that make the self suffient earlier...

... humans form dust ie chemicals?

Wait a while for cloning to improve...

As for the laughable if scientists are right explin why no cure for AIDS...

Ok miss 'wisdom' thats like saying if scientists were right cavemen would have had jet fighters as no such thing as time...

in other words, just as the cure aint been invented yet does not mean it won't in a decade or so... science develops and invents & needs technology

Your argument is like saying if science why cant man fly in 1902

I never said the bible said the world was 5000 years but its was 4thousand and something...

therefore 5000 years would be more and therefore anything that can porve the world older would win the argument

All those who overed better systems then carbon dating all still showeed the world was older then the bible stated... thats all you need to prove it wrong

Because they are told that anything that proves them wrong is the work of some evil creature who wants them to be evil for no real reason. Some of them will say that it is inaccurate and it is. But it is inaccurate by about 12 years. I don't think 12 years inaccuracy is going to swing the age of the Earth by a few billion years. But other forms of Isometric dating prove the Earth is much older still. You can date with any unstable isotope and some of them decay allot slower than C14.

Some girl said in their answer that carbon 14 diffusues from the atmosphere into all animals when they die. This is totally incorrect. Lets take the example of a tree. When a tree is growing it takes carbon out of the atmosphere. There is an equilibrium of different isotopes of carbon within this mass. Some 97% is carbon 12 (which we all know and love, some 2% is carbon 13 and the important isotope here is carbon 14 standing a t a whopping 1%. Even though this figure is small it still represents a literally countless amount of carbon 14 atoms.

Carbon 14 though does revert to its more stable form of carbon 12 though only after the organism dies. This is called decay and what is happening is that the carbon atroms are losing their extra neutrons. This is what is being measured.not any atmospheric conditional assumptions about millions of years ago. So a peice of furniture can be carbon dated because when a tree is felled it stops living and the carbon starts decaying.

Now since all living things are organic compounds that means we all have carbon in our bodies we all contain carbon 14. Therefore we should all be able to be carbon dated when we die.

Carbon dating is also based on the idea of nuclear decay which is the probablity factor for each single carbon atom that it may deacy. The method has become much more reliable in recent years though when using live subjects the calculations and testing equipment involved can lead to false negatives. This is one are where the christians whon belive the literal truth of the bible have seized upon as evidence that carbon dating is flawed though it is a widely recognised phenomenon among scientific circlews. I varbon dated myslef and to my surprise i was over ten thousand years old, i am bald but i dont think i am that old.

Theories are only models and science does not state that it knows everything. The models point to the conlcusion that the earth is bilions of years old. Though we cant be certain on what exact date the earth became a planet, i personally think it was June the 3rd, June, 5 999 998 994 BC. Though these models cant be precise they do show that the assumption that the earth is fiove thousand years old is clearly wrong.

Another way to disprove the five thousand year theory would be to look at darwins theory of evolution and the rate of change within a species, i.e. how long does it take mfor one animal to evbolve inot another.

Because for them it's a matter of faith, and to accept that this God that they believe in probably doesn't exist, would mean that perhaps heaven doesn't exist, and if that's true then that means oblivion after death, and that we are not an all powerful race created by some all powerful (masculine) god, but the result of primate evolution.

Most religious people would rather die oblivious then ponder such a thing. And religions do have their place in society. They give people morals and a blueprint by which to lead their lives. To most that's better than constantly asking "Why are we here". It's comforting to believe that we are here for a reason, created by a greater, powerful conciousness. It's a thought process that goes back over 30 thousand years to when our ancestors asked the same questions and started worshipping the Earth as the Great Mother Goddess.

Religion also has its place in the world's most horrendous atrocities, such as all 'Holy Wars' which were about power more than anything, and the terrible way women have, and are still being, treated, supposedly because we created 'Original Sin'. And they are also used by certain people to justify prejudices against other ethnic groups in a bid to dominate the world.

I'm not an atheist though, I put my faith in the Earth and the better nature of most humans. But, you say carbon dating proves there is no 'God', but can you actually, conclusively, prove that there is no Higher Conciousness at all? I don't think anyone can.

Of course the earth is older than the Bible - it would have to have been written by humans. The Bible does not have an actual original publisher's date written in it. There is no point in the Bible where the date of the earth's creation is specifically mentioned or indeed implied.

Radiocarbon dating relies upon the halflife or radioactive carbon 14. The oldest dating so far ever produced (according to http://www.c14dating.com/ ) is in the region of SIXTY THOUSAND years ago, although you might not know the difference between sixty thousand years and "millions of years" you should be aware that there is actually a noticable difference.

Dendrochronology allows us to date back to almost 12,000 years ago, Ice core dating allows us to date atmospheic events back to over 400,000 years ago. We can date back much father usig geoloical stratigraphy.
But unless you personally own a macine for radiocarbon dating several hundred times more accurate and sophisticated than any currently existing on earth I would be careful about making claims you can't substanciate.

Furthermore, how does the perfection of the Bible prove God's existence ithe first place? I can't find any reference to this in any of the more common philosophical theological arguments, nor is it mentioned in "The History of Western Philosophy" by B.Russell (1968 edition). If you are relying on a disproof of a point that nobody else recognises (or a point from a source of uncommon obscurity) then I would recosider rhe validity of the approach. The reasoning you used is highly flawed too. An equally vaild statement would be "The man in the blue shirt was actually much fatter than size seven... that's proof he was lying about his weight... therefore he was a woman".

Here is a coherant and reasoed argumen against the existence of God http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/russell0.htm
As you can see this does not relly upon random and unsubstanciated premises.

To return to the former point I made, how would a perfect Bible prove the existence of God? I cannot see how this would be so because, as we all know, the Bible was formulated by the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD and was not translated to Latin fully until the Vulgate of Saint Jerome several decades later. Given the original intent of the Bible as layed out by the Council of Nicaea we can clearly and unequivocally conclude the Bible does not pretend perfection and although the Catholic Church of the Middle Ages claimed it infalliable we can see this was generaly an age of ingnorance and superstation and therefore hardly what we should take as the current opinion of theologians.

Carbon dating does not prove any such thing.Carbon dating is based on some assumptions that are simply not true.
Carbon 14 (radioactive carbon) slowly builds up in the atmosphere until it reaches earth where it begins to enter living things. When the organism dies, the C14 decays, and when it is tested, the amount of C14 left is supposed to tell us when it died.
BUT, since the assumption was that the earth was millions of years old, it was overlooked that, in order for C14 dating to work, the C14 in the atmosphere has to reach equilibrium; a process that would take about 10,000 years starting from a new earth. Guess what? It's still not @ equilibrium. This means that the earth isn't millions of years old AND that C14 dating cannot be accurate.
Not only that, but live mollusk have been C14 dated at 4,000 years old. While still alive! And Mammoth carcasses are notorious for having huge dating differences between one part of the body and another. Could the leg have died 2,250 years before the trunk?
C14 dating proves no such thing.

My dear friend obviously you are not a Hebrew scholar, if you were then you would find out that in the orginal text of the first book of the Bible allows for God to take as much time as He needed to make the earth. In fact a mere study of time would prove to you that science and what the Bible says can both be true. How do we measure time? By the sun, well the sun wasn't created until the third day in the Bible. So there was a period of time where there was no sun, and if there was no sun, then time as you and I know it could have passed millions and billions of years because there was no was to measure it. Your logic of that proof that carbon dating shows the earth is older then the Bible says it is so therefore there is no God is a flawed logic at best.

The Bible doesn't say the earth is only 5000 years old. Only Creationists believe that. Gen 1 v 1 states that the heavens and the earth already existed before the first creative "day", probably for billions of years. Also the original Aramaic word for "day" doesn't necessarily mean a literal 24 hour day, it can mean time period, era etc etc.

Also, proof that the Bible is not perfect doesn't prove that there is no God. That's like saying that Piltdown Man proves evolution is a fraud. You have to remember that the Bible was originally written for the benefit of an agricultural society who didn't have the same grasp of cosmology and science that we do. It explained things in terms that they could understand.

I hate to help out the bible thumpers, here, but actually, carbon dating is based upon assumptions as to what the ratio of carbon isotopes to regular carbon was at different time periods. While it is very accurate for fairly recent events (aprox 100000 years if I recall correctly -- I will look it up and post references), anything older than that involves assumptions about the earth at that time that we just can't prove yet... there is circumstantial evidence that we have determined older ratios with some accuracy, that is a far cry from "absolute proof".

Consider that when an archaeologist submits an item for carbon dating, they also submit, with the documentation, what age range they "expect"... while I would never accuse someone of throwing out results that don't meet expectations, can you be 100% certain that it doesn't happen?

Not only Christians question carbon dating... some scientists also question how "reliant" we have become on it... it's a tool, but not proof.

I am a Christian, and I accept carbon dating. I know that the Earth is billions of years old. The Bible does not state how long the days were. They could have been millions of years. I also believe dinosaurs existed and were wiped out by God to make way for other animals and humans.

FROM all of my Study, these are my Belief's at this Time.
1. Adam and Eve were not the FIRST Human Being's on the EARTH.
2. Read Ecclesiastes chapter one-----a Million Year's would pretty well ERASE any trace of a Past Generation.
3. The EARTH is about 4 to 5 Billion Year's Old.
My Study involved the BIBLE, Man's Research, Common-Sense, HOLY SPIRIT etc.
You do not have to Believe what I Believe.
Anybody can be Decieved.
I could be wrong.
I could be right.
Ditto.............if I am wrong, I am still going Home to Heaven one Day, then GOD can show me how it work's----Fo' Real....................

carbon dating does not prove the earth is millions of years old, only the materials that it is made of.

lets talk about carbon dating. one of the laws of conservation of energy states that no new matter can be created, nor can matter be destroyed. it can only assume a different form.

that said, just because a piece of paper can be radio-carbon dated to the 12th century, does not mean it was created in the 12th century. obviously it existed in the form of a tree or other pulpus material that was used to make the paper.

also, any carbon that is on the material being radio-carbon dated can cause a false reading. not to mention the fact that there is an inverse square that cannot be resolved at this time, dealing with the dating of ancient materials.

as for the age of the earth, who says that God did not have all the pieces out there in His galactic tinker-toy set, and then he put it all together with a word?

remember, the bible is the history of one man's family and his descendents: adam.
