Of course you don't have to wear a white dress and unless you are a virgin I don't really think you should. If you want to wear a black dress, go for it. I wore a long, straight, very fitted gold lace dress with a black under petticoat, I had a long gold scarf with black fringes which was held in place with deep red rose buds, it was really beautiful and more stunning than anything I've ever seen. ( everyones opinion, not only mine ).

i seen red dresses and blue and all kind of colors but not black, i guess because the man dresses in black and everyone THINKS it would be a bad idea to wear black but i know some people do it so if that's what you want go for it.

You don't have to wear white, but black is commonly associated with mourning so it shouldn't be worn at a wedding.
There's actually an old poem about bridal gown colors--
Married in yellow, ashamed for your fellow
Married in brown, you will move out of town
Married in black, you will wish yourself back
Married in pink, of you he will think
Married in red, you will wish yourself dead
Married in white, you have chosen all right
... and it goes on from there.

I am engaged and very much a "traditional" kind of girl. BUT, I think with weddings - whatever you want you should have! A completely black wedding gown does sound a bit morbid, but if it's what you like then you should do it. There are lots of pretty dresses out there, though, that are white or ivory that incorporate black in them (www.alfredangelo.com). Do what makes you happy!
All of my bridesmaids are wearing black... with white & red roses for flowers... I don't care if people think it's morbid - I like it and think it's elegant :)

If you are going with a formal wedding then a white dress would probably be more appropriate, if you are going with a semi or non formal wedding then you can wear whatever..it's your day, you can pretty much wear what you want.

Girls generally didn't wear white wedding dresses until the 1900's. Any color is totally acceptable if you want it.
