January 1848. James Marshall was building a sawmill for John Sutter in Coloma, CA when he discovered the small gold nugget which started the great California goldrush of 1849.

Gold was discovered in 1848. People began going to California in great numbers to search for gold in 1849 -- that's why they were called "Forty-niners"

I think it was in 1848, because the people who came the next year to mine for gold were called Forty-Niners.

1848..everyone came from everywhere else looking for it in 1849--which is where the term "the 49ers" came from.

(it took some time for word to get out in those days)
