Gold was discovered in 1848. People began going to California in great numbers to search for gold in 1849 -- that's why they were called "Forty-niners"

1848..everyone came from everywhere else looking for it in 1849--which is where the term "the 49ers" came from.
(it took some time for word to get out in those days)
