The deductable amount ($500.00 in your case) is simply 'deducted' from the amount the insurance company pays to you or the body shop for repairs. It sounds like your company uses direct repair shops, which probably means the repairer handles all the paperwork for the ins company and they are paid 'directly' from them after repairs are made to your car. You will have to pay the shop your portion of the bill ($500.00) when you pick-up your car.

What the person said about the insurance check minus the $500.00 for the deductible is correct. Say, you were hit on the right side and your door, fender and tire has to be replaced. An insurance adjuster will contact you and tell you to take your car to a couple of places for estimates and they will take the lower one. If the total comes to $3,000.00, you, or the body shop, will get a check for $2,500.00 and you will have to pay the body shop the other $500.00. Now if you pay it up front from a credit card, checking account or savings, the insurance company will give you a check for the amount minus the $500.00 to pay back where you got the money from and you will be responsible for the rest.

Your deductible is the amount your obligated to pay on an insurance claim. So the first $500 in damages are out of your pocket. It sounds to me like the insurance company doesn't think that there's more than $500 in damages. So you get your car fixed and if the cost goes over $500 then your insurance company will start a claim and pay the amount over $500.
