Chess for reasoning and deduction.
If you want to sound like a damn parrot instead then study and regurgitate what you studied in the same words. :)
But study as well to help both aspects.

It depends. How will playing chess help me plow my field? feed my family? pay my bills?

I agree that it promotes critical thinking skills, but general knowledge has its' place as well. How about both? Why have one and not the other?

Study and get good grades so that when your too old and wrinkly to be an underwear model you'll have something to fall back on!

yeah, i agree with you, but i most prefer is to study because chess is so boring for me now
