It may be hard but the best thing that you can do is be up front. They may not want to accept that their child has taken something (stolen), but a good parent will try to correct the behavior and keep it from happening again. If you don't tell them then this behavior will be repeated and may become a habit later on. Don't kid yourself. They knew that she didn't have the things before and if she's lying now she's done it to them before. Lots of parents will get defensive - but you've got to make them face the music.

"Little Lulu is missing her favorite sunglasses. She had them Wednesday when Little Cindy was over. We were in such a rush when we cleaned up after their play session, can you check whether perhaps we put them in with Little Cindy's things by mistake?"
Putting the blame on yourself will make her realize you aren't attacking, yet, most people will realize who is really to blame. Your friend will check, the things will be returned, and most likely she will talk to her daughter about personal possesions- if not bring up the topic with her one day of how kids just don't have any concept of ownership at that age- they do, you'll be lying, but it will work- and she probably will not take offense.

I have a 5 year old as well and I can tell you he wouldn't understand what it meant to 'steal'. I would talk to the parents about the 'borrowing' and how upsetting it is for your child. Then it is up to the parents to discuss with the child it is not right to fib and take others peoples things without asking. If it continues then do not have them in your home.

Ask her parents" Have you seen my daughters sunglasses they seem to be missing" Then when they see them they'll know their kid must have taken them. Maybe it'll lead to more conversation and you can bring the other things up.

I would say - I believe the 5 year old has mistakenly taken our babies things. Will you please look for these items and return them if you find them.
Then watch the little girl before she leaves and say honey you have to leave the toys here so you have something to play with when you come back.
