There are mostly SSRIS now which are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors which help such as Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Welbutrin, Lexapro - they all work a bit different - some for OCD and depression and some for anxiety and depression. It gives your brain chemistry a little boost. Most people with depression are lacking some serotonin or norepinephrine. This can cause the symptoms of depression. There is a new SSRI out now that also effects norep. called Cymbalta which is supposed to help the physical symptoms of depression like sleeping too much, loss of motivation, etc.
You have to talk to a psychistrist or family doctor about which one may be right for you. Some have more sider effects than others -- the ones without side effects are more so - Lexapro, Prozac (some people have bad side effects though), Wellbutrin (helps reduce other cravings like eating and smoking too which is a bonus), and Celexa. Paxil is hard to withdraw from.
Lexapro is more for anxiety and depression, Prozac for OCD and depression. There used to be tricyclics and some other ones but those are not used now so much cause the SSRIs work better, haev less side effects and don't interact so muh with other medications someone may be on. I have included some links about SSRIs and anti depressants below.
I don't know ur situation or if these would be for you but the best ones are Lexapro, Celexa and Wellbutrin. Virtually no side effects and no weight gain. Paxil can cause extreme weight gain and Prozac can be a hard med to be on for some.
I used to be depressed and I hated the idea of taking something to "make me happy" but that was a stupid way of thinking looking back. If my brain chemistry was off and I needed a little boost, why not - So I did take them - most of them to find the one best for me and Paxil worked best on my mood but I gained weight from it and getting off of it was hard - the other ones are not like that. They are safe and helpful and a good thing to do.
Anything you hear on TV etc about teens killing themselves when they take anti depressants - this is the science behind that: In order to kill yourself, it take planning and suicidal people tend to be so depressed that they don't have the energy to plan it. So - scientists say that this can happend b/c when the person starts taking the med and begins to feel better and think clearer, they may still be suicidal but now they are able to plan it - their mind isn't so fogged. So - anti depressants don't cause people to kill themselves - they make it look like that but that is not it. They are safe and helpful and can really make life feel better- and just cause you may need them now doesn't mean you will need them forever but some do. I didn't but regardless, it is so important to get help if it is out there - if something can make you happier, why not?
Good luck~

most drugs for depression are serotonin-re-uptake inhibitors these mess with you natural chemical balance in your body. It is not good to do this. Drugs like this a being prescribed all to often to people who do not really have a chemical imbalance or to people that are just depressed for awhile but not clinically depressed. Once one starts taking these drugs it is most likely that you will have to take them for the rest of your life in order to fell "right" but the drug amounts will increase and ultimately destroy receptors in your brain that you need. Most everyone goes through depression in their life at least a few times, it is natural to do so. Please only use drugs as a last resort after extensive review from a psychologist

I was on Paxil once, can't remember whether or not it did me any good or not. the same doctor also had me on Dilantin (horrible side effects) to prevend seizures which after 3 years I found out I didn't need, so just got sick of all the different meds my doctor had me on and eased out of them altogether.
I try to avoid stress or deal with it other than using medication.

Cymbalta has really worked for me ... but you need to consult a psychiatrist and get a presecription for a medicine that will work for you along with counselling.

Each case of depression is different and must be specifically medicated. Talk to your doctor; he's the professional.
