usually back pain comes from bending over to pick things up. your suppose to keep the back straight and bend with your knees. another thing that causes back pain is not carrying a back pack correctly. this issue takes time to create the pain. the back pack should be carried up high on you back with both straps. sagging bags or on one shoulder is not a good idea. some will experience this sooner then others. also you abs might be to week. strangely enough people who keep both upper and lower abs strong generally have less back problems then people who ignore the ab muscles and try to work out the back.

I'm 24 years/170lbs, and I have lower back problems too. I actually threw my back out and had to go to physical therapy for months. While in therapy, I learned that it's only by strengthening your abs and obliques you can take the strain off of your back. There are certain exercises that I cannot do, because it's too much for my back, but I've also found that unless I work out and keep in shape, I'm more apt to have pain in my lower back.

Just work on strengthening your abs (especially the lower abs), stay limber and don't forget your stretches, and talk to the people at the gym. They will be able to give you a better idea than I can do by describing it.

Lower back problems can only be helped by workouts. Talk to the people who run the gym. They can help with specifics. I have lower back problems too and I work out six days/week. If you want your protein shakes then drink them. I doubt they could hurt you in any way.

See a physician and ask to be sent to physical therapy. The therapist can give you exerecises that you can do both at home and in the gym and advise how strenuous your workout should be.

Good luck!

Been there.

protein shakes can actually cause weight gain and are not always healthy. why waste your health just because they are sitting in the cupboard.

i would consult a physiotherapist prior to reisiting the gym. i am in the same boat. she can tell you what you can do and when. chances are you moved up too quickly and strained something.

you should realy work on strengthening your lower back, your abs and obliques. your pain is probably caused by weak muscles in your lower back, and improving your core strength is the best way to work on this
