You can buy it where you buy your other mixers. Your substitutions would probably work also. It is just a way to get sugar into a cold drink in a hurry and yet not have it sink to the bottom.

Simple syrup is sugar...regular sugar...melted and boiled into water. Generally it's something like one cup of water to 2 cups of water. It's a way to add sugar to any drink without having sugar crystals floating around the glass. I use it for iced tea.

Simple syrup is just plain white sugar and water usually heated in a sauce pan to dissolve the sugar...not really sure of the measurements, but I am sure you can find one on maybe Food Network.com or other cooking or recipe website.

a simple syrup is one part sugar to one part hot/boiling water. its used in drinks like mojitos cause the plain granulated sugar wont dissolve in alcohol well. the simple syrup sweetens your drink without you having to have grains of sugar in your mouth.

all of these answers are correct. it is sugar that is boiled in water. however, instead of looking for the correct measurements and trying to do it yourself, which takes forever (i had to do it at work), you can buy a bottle at a liquor store or a really good grocery store. it should only cost you like $6 and lasts for a very long time.
