The reason I'm asking this question is because I was wondering if if you would actually save any money by building your own trusses.

There could be a problem building your own trusses. In California at least the Building Department wants to see the design calculations and the calcs must be stamped by a structural engineer.

If you were to just frame the roof with rafters instead of trusses you would not need any calculations.

I guess it depends on what you are doing.
For instance, right now we are building an attached garage on to an existing home. There are some complicated things going on with the roof because it has to properly tie into the home. Also, it's only a double car garage, so it's not a very big roof.
In our case, it was cheaper to build our own, than to order them.

In most cases though, its cheaper and less of a headache just to get the trusses.
