They had to call the police a couple months ago because someone a neighbor was screaming threats in his window. He is elderly and never leaves his house. Then the neighbor's pitbulls keep getting loose and running threw their yard. Then the boys clothes were found in their backyard about a month ago. Now brass knukles and a lighter was found. The police haven't done much about it. We live in North Carolina is it legal to have a security camera in your yard?

To find out if it is legal to have a security camera in your backyard, all you have to do is ask the cops or call a security company pretending to be interested in they security systems. They should know.
As far as the pitbulls go: if they do not escape from your neighbor's yard, there is nothing you can do legally. Since you mentioned the neighbor being elderly, that could be a means for your neighbor to feel safe in their property(his/hers). As far as the brass knuckles and lighters etc go: as long as there is no evidence of any crime comitted is the police not authorized to conduct an investigation(that is applicable to all 50 states). In order to conduct an investigation someone has to report a crime and then the cops will file a report on the subject matter. Reporting a crime that has not been committed is a felony, so you can't just insist that a crime has been committed, there has to be one. Sorry that I cannot give you any better options.....

I am not sure what needs to happen here. Since the cops have little to go on without proof maybe your family should ask someone in law enforcement (police, sherriff, courts etc.) whether a security camera is illegal. Other than that a security camera is not a bad idea as long as it is recording his property only.

I don't see why it would be illegal to film your own yard. You have to make sure that it is not directed onto any of the neighbors property. Maybe your family member should buy their own pack of pit bulls and don't tell anyone. The next time someone hops that fence they'll have a little surprise.

It is not illegal anywhere to have a security camera on your property as long as it does not capture things off of your property.

Now using evidence captured on a video camera in a court of law is a completely different story.

Its a shame - sounds like its time for him to move. If he doesn't move, tell him to have hurricane shutters installed over his windows. It will block out the outside world. Have signs put up with a fence. No trespassing. I have blocked out my neighborhood with huge privet bushes, beautifully manicured. I think my neighbors are pissed because they never get to see my coming and going, and I don't give any of them the time of the day. It pisses people off when they don't know what your doing - hahha

continue to call the police, trap the dog and call the pound, and put a security camera up. Go to his house and do this for him.
