Its an extremely self rewarding task! Great high adventure smorgy!

You could get the cheap black pepper at the dollar store, and sprinkle generously over the trash, anytime it isn't supervised..or get a can with the good lid.
this could be a fatal habit, so it is very important to get her to stop.

As an owner of a dog that looks on the trash can as a lunch box/toy box all i can say is find a place to keep the trash that the dog can't reach. I have been trying to keep mine out of the trash for years and that is the only thing that worked. He finally stopped getting into it when I was looking....not good enough. We moved it ....no more problem.
Try a can with a flip up lid and keep it turned around backwards so she can't lift the lid. That works for our kitchen trash can. the bathroom one we just moved to the linnen closet.

If the trash can is in the cupboard, try installing a child-proof latch on it (the type of thing you would use to keep toddlers out of the cupboards). If it's the bathroom trashcan on the floor she likes, try putting it on the back of the toilet and emptying it regularly. My dogs are avid trash-getters-into and these have helped solve the problem.

Good luck!

The trash smells good to her and she wants to chew it put her nose in it and whip her or you could just move the trash into another room the pup doesnt go into.

She shouldn't be loose in your home to get into the trash. It's not her fault, it's yours. She has no idea of what you expect and she's just being a puppy. If you cannot watch her ALL the time, you need to either crate train her, or keep her on a leash, attached to your arm/leg.
Best wishes

T ry to put a lid in the trash so your maltese won't go to your trash.

Get a taller trash can, and if she's tipping them over, but a brick in the bottom to keep it from being tipped over by her.

I have the exact same problem with my chihuahua. All she does is go on the bathroom garbage can and take all the toilet paper out, its disgusting. I've tried everything and don't know what to do either. If you find out let me know. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

Suggestion:

Get a trash can with a lid (for your kitchen). I did that with my dogs years ago and don't have any problems...
