What stinks to you smells absolutely great to them. If you buy something that doesn't smell when he chews it more than likely he will not be interested in it. That is unless you have played with it on several occasions.. like a toy or something he has fun with... like a ball or frisbee or something like that. Those are usually the things you don't want to leave him alone with. A ball can choke them and you don't really want your dog to eat any plastic or rubber that can cause stomach problems if they eat too much of it. So really you are much safer with a stinky rawhide bone than a toy. Although do be careful with the raw hide as dogs have been known to choke on them as well because of the occasional larger pieces that come off and get stuck in their throat. I personally use pig ears or cow hooves. The advantage is that is they get stuck between in their gums they will eventually melt away unlike a bone that breaks off and stays stuck in the gums. They have to work at tearing up the hoof or ear so you don't have to worry about large pieces getting stuck in their throats. If they were to ever get stuck they will soften and eventually go down where as a bone or rawhide wont

Also very important!!! If you use a tennis ball pop holes in it so as to release the gasses trapped inside. There have been reported cases of dogs being poisioned from popping the ball when they chew on it

Are you sure that it's the chew? It could very well be his mouth/saliva that is making the chew stink. Try a chew that is smaller and would be gone in a day. How old is your shih tzu? He/she could be overdue for a dental cleaning, which would create a stinky mouth. Have you tried those dental chews? The small ones are quickly chewed-up. This does not eliminate the need for dental cleanings, though. Also, you could try "Greenies" treats. They don't agree with one of my dogs, but many people buy them for their pets. By the way, if you keep your shih tzu in coat, make sure that whatever chew you get does not get tangled in his face fur. Had that happen once with my shih tzu. It was one of those rawhide rods. Caused big problems.

Look for a sterilized femur bone,or even a smoked one.Feed stores carry them and so do a lot of pet shops. Then mix peanut butter and yogurt together, stuff the bone and freeze it.
Your dog will lick at this for hours and they are very hard,if not impossible to splinter.I seriously doubt your shih tzu can break them.
Please stay away from Rawhide, greenies and pig ears, that we are now being told are treated with formaldehyde.
Bones are simple with no worry about chemicals.

Take a look at some of the other bones- those that can be easily cleaned and are able to stand up to an active puppy's chewing.

I had a dog that would destroy any stuffed toy and anything that was soft rubber by chewing it. She really liked rubber kongs though. We got her a disc shaped one with holes in it that we could put cookies or peanut butter in for a special treat. She loved that! She also liked nylabones and gumabones (I think that's what they were called).

Give him a clean milk bone or you can just buy your dog a rubber toy but if you do clean the rubber toy after buying it. and always brush the teeth too, so the teeth can be clean too.

Those kong rubber dog toys don't smell, and they are easy to wash. They make them in sizes for all dogs. AND they last a long time!
