O.K., in 7th grade(only 2 years ago), I took pre-algebra. Later in the year I found out that only two groups got pre-algebra, and the other two groups got 7th grade math. Being in pre-algebra is above average, and means your daughter dose well enough in math to be put in the top math class in her grade. If she passes the class with high enough grades, she may get algebra in eighth grade(it's a high school level course). If her school is like mine, she could end up getting a high school credit for taking algebra, meaning bigger better math courses in high school, and only having to take two math courses in high school, rather that three(although she can take more than the required number if she wants.) Tell her Good Luck and work hard, offer to help her if she needs it and encourage her during the year. Be confident, the school thinks she's ready for the course, so she probably is!!

i live in a small town with a small school. I,m going into the eith grade this year and I took pre-algebra last year. I'm one of the smarter kids in my class and I'm in L.E.A.P. (Learning Excellerated Assessment Program) which is my schools program for smart kids and out of 60 some students in my grade only 4 kids are in it. So I say she is above average if there are people in her class taking plain 7th grade math but if everybody is taking pre-algebra than it's average but definately not below average Have her ask her friends what math class they have to figure out.

Pretty average...I took Pre-algebra then, Algebra in 8th grade, and on up though high school took the rest of the math courses like Geometry and Calculus.

No worries--she's right on course.

That's about right for a normal-to-bright student. At that age, the synapses needed for more abstract higher-level math are just beginning to fire. A very few kids can succeed in Algebra 1 at that age, some can take Algebra 1 in 8th grade, most will take it by 9th grade. Mastery of basic concepts is more important than rushing ahead.

I went to a private school and took pre-algebra in 7th, algebra in 8th, took some more in high school and finished high school with a second college level course in calculus. She could do the same if the school offers them.

I'd say average. I took Algebra in 6th grade, but I slowed down somewhat.

I'd say it's average. Most 7th graders do. and she'll probably take it next year too as a review. you dont take algebra 1 until high school unless you request it or she requests it.

Well, going by the standards when I went (I'm in college now), that would be one year above average. She's doing good, don't worry.

It's a little advanced... I took it in 7 th grade middle school too. I was offered it as an advanced placement based on my CAT test scores. Not everyone in the school was taking it that year. She seems to be right on time, if not a bit ahead.
