Movies are choreographed and meant to entertain, not necessarily teach real application of martial arts. Real fights rarely last more than 10 seconds at the most, and that simply wouldn't sell tickets!
...makes you think about pay-per-view contests too, doesn't it?

There are two kinds of defense in my art (Karate). 1st is blocking an attack with your body and pushing it away. Like a chest block or a leg block. The second is to get yourself out of the way of the attack. Avoiding, moving, advancing to an angle, etc.
Blocking is taught first because it's the easiest to learn, then we move on to avoiding wich is much more difficult because it involves more overall body control and an ability to read your opponents moves.
Blocking is effective and should not be done with the wrist but the forearm. We don't teach to break a wrist with a kick because that kind of accuracy and speed are difficult to master. You broke that wrist by accident and probably couldn't do it again if you tried.
Rushing forward doesn't work for anything except JuJitsu because it's uncontrolled movement. You are forcing your body weight on someone who may be armed. The only place to go from there is on the ground. You don't want to be rolling on the ground with your opponent!
Crashing should only be done in a controlled way as part of a planned attack with something else to it like elbow or knee attacks, not as a defensive move.

Asking whether it's better to block or to avoid a kick is like asking whether the punch or the kick is the better attack. All are methods that should be among your skills.
I have had masters block my attacks in ways that caused me, the attacker, immense pain. I am sure they could have caused me grave injury if they weren't playing nice. Martial artists with this kind of expertise are rare, but the only way to learn to block in such an effective way is to dutifully practise your basics from the beginning.

because Hollywood don't know a chit about martial arts.
Chinese art isn't exactly the best art to learn if you want to defend against a powerful kick such as Muay Thai.

Hello? MOVIES. That means NOT REAL. Real fights with no rules don't last that long because boens break and people really lose their will to fight with their eyes gouged out and their arms and legs broken.

Thats because, whomever's arm you broke didn't know how to properly defend themselves. By the way, movies aren't real.

They do it because it's the movies, and you need to be entertained. They can't show that one kick will break your wrist.
