What I want to know really is, do you think that families could get back to being families if (ok all of you womens lib people dont freak out here) women stayed home. Even if there were no children involved. If women stayed home and ran things the way they should be. Cooking, cleaning, writing out the bills, taking care of family situations, raising the children. Its already been proved that if you do little things to save money, like no long distance, cut cupons, use the off brands, it can be afforded. So if things went back more to the way they used to be, do you all think marriages would stay stronger, and children would have a little bit fewer problems.

I think that the family has definitely been hurt by the 2 party work scenario that is currently almost neccessary for the mojority of households in America. Not only that, I'd take it further and say our entire way of life has been hurt by it. Because families have two incomes they can afford more things right? but look at the cost of housing now. It requires a two income family in most cases to purchase even the cheapest new home.

And who is raising our kids? Day care workers, the vast majority of whom I wouldn't EVER allow my children to be left alone with.

Now I disagree with your assessment that it should be the woman who stays home. I know a few families where the woman was able to make more money than the man and so the man stays home and does the homemaker job, but also has a part time job on the side. They are lucky in the sense that the woman was able to complete her degree and therefore increase her earning potential beyond that of her spouse.

But children definitely need to be raised by a parent. Being raised by stranger ( ie day care providers ) leaves the children without the ties to the family that most of us grew up with. And how are they to learn to parent without a parenting example? Are we to become a society that allows our children to be raised by strangers? With those strangers deciding hich values to instill in OUR children?

I also know that since pulling our children out of Day Care and rearranging our work shifts so that one parent is home with them at all times, each of our children raised their grades by one letter grade ( at least ) My oldest raised his D+ in Math to a A- in one semester. The difference? We were there to help him when he got home from school as opposed to later in the evening after he spent hours in an unruly Day Care.

In a two income family there must ALWAYS be a trade off. Whereas in the traditional family model, the trade offs were much more minimalised.

That is why I chose to work part time and hours that worked around my kids, so I could be the supermom that I am. Now I have gone back to school to become a nurse, a field where I can pick and chose what days/hours to work. I do not plan on my career taking over my happiness.

I agree that a stay at home mom makes for a happier, and yet more broke family. You have to prioritize if you want to stay home. We do without alot of stuff other people have. But for me it's worth it.
