First off you cant group all women or men as same. Each are different in their own ways. So to answer your question you have to assume! This means what would "most" of either group say if telling the truth. Now I actually did some unofficial research on this very topic after listening to Tom Lykesis (sp) on radio. I found I agree with him and the men I spoke to (including my husband) did also. Men are driven more sexually although some women have strong sex drives as well but that's not topic. I asked these men (over a dozen) these questions.
1. Would you have sex with any or all your females friends if they would allow you?
A. all said yes!
2. Do you choose your female friends because they are sexually attractive to you?
A. Most said yes (over half)
3. In the beginning of the friendship, with your female Friends, was goal sex?
A. nearly all said yes!
Now my study was done with just a select few and was NOT a professional study but I think it can allow us to assume men can have female friends but in the back of their minds they are boning us!!

There's a gap between wishing and doing. How wide or narrow that gap is, is entirely up to the individual.
I don't see there should be a difference between women with male friends and men with female friends. But then, our reputation probably doesn't help.

Of course men and women can be just friends. When I was on my own, I always chose men as roommates instead of women (they didn't borrow your clothes or makeup) There was nothing sexual about it, we shared a home and had our own rooms.
One of my dearest friends is male (and he is married, as am I) my husband and I both appreciate him for the stuff he does for us. Both of us can call one another, no questions asked and give or do what the other person needs (example borrow my car, money etc...we have never taken advantage of this)
Believe it or not, not all men and women CONSTANTLY think about getting laid, friendship with the opposite sex is very possible and does not have to have a hidden meaning

yes it's true in some situations but false in some others. Guys can have female friends & never want more from them or they can turn out to want more from them just like women can have guy friends & not want more from them but they could also turn out to want more

I don't believe men and women can be Just Friends, someone on one side or the other is just waiting or hoping it will become more. If it's not you, it's them.

I would think so. I have had guy friends that were never anything more and they never acted like they wanted anything more. It all depends on the person.

no...a man can only be friends with a woman if he likes her\wants to have sex with her or vice versa....otherwise its not true friendship...their mental make up is totally different.
