this is a real problem, a real big problem, religion, ideals, beliefs, etc. etc. all this most people just follow blindly because on the surface the sh*t may seem to be good but hey we all know that religions are f*cked up and for the most part they only cause problems, and probably what you will say after me saying that goes as follows, "we'll imagine a world without religion, imagine a world of nothing but athiest and whatnot" but look i'm not saying that's what i want because that would suck, yes? all i'm saying is that truth is all we need, not some book, not some crazy mans ideals and beliefs regardless how nice they seem, all one needs is truth, so believe in nothing unless it agrees with you and what you believe to be true. By the way, i do believe in the maker, the creator, but he's not jesus and he's not apart of any single religious sect. He's just GOD, and that's where i leave it. You know what i mean?

Whether you believe in Jesus, or Christianity or Islam or whatever, isn't saying "he's just God" a little risky? Whoever he is, he is the creator of all, including you. Do you wanna piss him off?
And pledging allegiance to ourselves is a little selfish, don't you think If the heroic firefighters and police officers involved in 9/11 had pled allegiance to themselves. Would they have risked their lives as they did to save others? Who would we turn away from , if we had allegiance to only ourselves?
If one doesn't have a set of beliefs, and is just believing in the "truth," then what would that truth be? It would be different for every person resulting in no absolute truth at all.
It starts with something this simple. Went to town last week, my husband remembers I was wearing a red shirt, I remember it was blue. No way to check the truth, but we are both convinced of our own truth. And so it begins....not a big deal over shirts, but is a big deal when the world comes to other things and the truth cannot be agreed upon.

I suppose ultimate truth means different things to different people. What's wrong with allegiance to our fellow human beings? After all, we are all we know we have. I don't share your belief in God but I agree with most of what you say. To me, if it exists it has to be some fool behind a curtain like in The Wizard of Oz. Religion causes more problems than anything else. More importantly, people use it as a way of justifying dreadful acts. If there is a God we'll all find out soon enough.

nineeleven_truth_expozer,
"Why can't people stop following others and just start pledging allegiance to themselves?"
You can. No one will stop you in the USA. God even lets you. That the choice we are gifted with. We can decide what to do all on our own. The "gift" to decide to go your own way was a choice we gained from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
We get to decide what's right and what's wrong. We have the capacity to forge ahead 'blindly' to our own path.
Those that have decided to follow the way of another have made a choice. And as the Rush song correctly states, " If we choose not to decide, we still have made a choice." - Freewill, Permanent Waves.
Those that have to go back to the source, that is; negate the effects of the original act of disobedience and return to God, have made a choice. He promises us things that no other can provide.
So it is not because of a lack of a reason other than feeling 'holy' that we do it. Rather I feel pretty lame knowing that I have caused others harm, and that harmful nature still dwells within me. So feeling 'holy' is not my reason. It's the promises that God gives to those that trust Him, that I come to Him, repenting of my sin nature I inherited- a part of being human.
The truth is in God. And that's where I need to go. All others may make their own choices.

Then, you believe in another maker.
Here's the Truth!
The Creator is God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit. They are the Triune God.
And, you are correct when you say He is not a part of any religious sect.

The thing is, I know that I myself, am not the source of all truth. Any truth I know, I've learned from other sources. We have to get it from somewhere, other than ourselves, I've learned truth from: books, movies, songs, other people, poetry, inspiration (from God), school, parents, religion, etc.
At the same time, I've learned lies from a lot of those sources too. I think what's more important here is for everybody to develop their abilities to tell the difference between what is true and what is not. We get bombarded with millions of messages every day, we've got to just learn how to weed through them all.

"So believe in nothing unless it agrees with you and what you believe to be true."
If I'm understanding you correctly, you're telling us to not believe in anything that isn't the same as what we believe in. That sounds like a prime example of a tautology to me...
You're asking why people believe in religion as opposed to the truth. People believe in religion because they think it *is* the truth.
Isn't the definition of belief to think that something is true?

How do you know that your assumptions about God are correct? Have you ever made an assumption about someone, just to find out later after you spoke to them that you assumed wrong?
Since you have never met God (I assume), and you don't seem to want to follow anyone who has spoken to God directly, then what is your basis for believing anything?

That would be the ultimate act of selfishness -- to, in effect, hold ourselves up as gods.
No, thank you.
