I am supposed to have my four wisdom teeth out on Friday (the 18th). Just brushed and flossed my teeth and saw that I have an absess and it just burst with fluid. I called the oral surgeons office but it's now closed this late in the afternoon. I will call back in the AM. I'm guessing they will give me antibiotics, but will they make me reschedule my surgery/extraction? I have to start back to college on the 24th. I cannot reschedule this appointment, and if I did, it would have to wait till the middle of december when I'm out of school. Anyone had this happen as far as an infection right before the extraction appt.??

** I do have Mitral Valve Prolapse so I always must take antibiotics before any dental appt. Guess I should definitely be careful with this infection since they normally stress about it just at a cleaning. :-/

Well, I got back in touch with the oral surgeon's office and talked with the receptionist. She said that they are calling me in a RX for a "Z-pack"?? antibiotic. She said they will still be doing the 4 extractions tomorrow morning like scheduled. I hope it's okay to continue on with the extractions with this big infection in my mouth. They said they didn't need me to come in so they could check it out in the office. Hmm, just hope they know what they are doing. I guess I'm just a bit worried due to the Mitral Valve Prolapse.

Without seeing your mouth, we can't really give a good answer. If the abscess was associated with one of your wisdom teeth, the bursting might be nature's own successful treatment. You can rinse with warm salt water to encourage anything that remains to keep draining. It could have been a relatively minor thing that just looks like a big deal to you. If you don't have any soreness under the corner of your lower jaw, it will probably be fine for Friday's appointment. But....... Do be sure to call first thing on Thursday so they have the option of starting you on an antibiotic if they feel it is needed.

yup, you'll get antibiotics, and you will have to reschedule, they can't go extracting a wisdom tooth while there is infection present....you want that crud following the blood supply to your brain do ya? Don't be stupid, take the antibiotics and reschedule the extraction.`

You really don't want to have the tooth out that has the abscess as it could spread the infection but you could probably have the other three out. Then wait till Dec for the others one.
