The "spirit" chooses a particular life in which to be incarnated for its potential in providing the desired lesson. There is no guarantee that it will happen because we all still have free will, or maybe that bus will hit us before we have a chance to learn it.

But let's say the life lesson was to learn humility. Being born into a poor family increases your chances of being humble. If the life lesson was to learn to share, being born into a family with many kids could provide you with that life lesson. If you don't learn the lesson...then its a "redo."

Good question. Maybe we have access to that knowledge between lives, and plan our next life accordingly. But, once here, we're on our own.
