from mid town east side to LAG and pays like $25. for upper west to LAG is like $45 (plus tip).
there is a blue super shuttle van that can be cheaper if you are traveling alone.
if you are not carrying too much stuff, then use the subway and the special airport train.

Enjoy your visit to NYC. If you're travelling alone taking the New York Airport Service shuttle bus. The shuttle bus drops you off in various conveniently situated locations in New York City. http://www.nyairportservice.com/fares.html
If you have one or more people accompanying you than I say a taxi cab is the way to go since the flat fare is $45.00 plus any tolls. The meter will not be turned on and the night surcharge will not be added.

I don't exactly know taxi rates for NY, but this is a big suggestion from me to you: tell the taxi driver what the price is gonna be before stepping inside. For example, if it's gonna be a trip from the airport to a house, hotel, etc. ..., ask the driver what the rate is going to be. Some taxi drivers take all these crazy routes and end up making you pay mucho. But try it! Ask before the ride... don't be afraid to do that!

$45 fixed price (plus tip and tolls) from JFK to Manhattan. A fair price. The taxi ranks are well organized, with respectful queues and a salaried airport staff member there to see you don't get ripped off (He issues a destination slip to the taxi driver.)
Or you can take the AirTrain monorail plus the subway: $7 total, more or less.

Depends how far you are taking the taxi and on traffic (time of day). You might want to check out their public transportation. City buses and the train would be a lot more economical. Also check with the hotel you will be staying at a lot of times they have their own shuttle buses.

It depends on the airport. I think about $50 from JFK, from Newark or LaGuardia it's not over $35 I don't think. If you fly in, come to either Newark or LaGuardia. Also, if you fly into Newark there is the NJ transit train that you can catch right to Penn Station... and it's a lot cheaper, and really REALLY quick and easy.

When I was there in the fall of 2002, there was a fixed fare of $35 to Manhattan. Perhaps it has gone up.

Just to add to the answer above, if you're leaving from LaGuardia, there's no flat rate. Most cabs run off the meter but you may find a car service that's negotiable.
