My husband's birthday is in a couple of weeks and since he was in the Navy (submarine) I thought it would be nice to make a cake in the shape of a sub or something similar to that. Any ideas would be appreciated.

My husband was on submarines too! His last deployment was on the U.S.S. Tusk.

I am thinking that you could bake the cake in 2 or 3 loaf pans, shaving the corner edges off to a smooth cylinder. Remember to pre-ice your cake so that you don't have crumbs on the final icing coat.

You could a use a cupcake for the periscope tower, with a licorice stick in the center. for extra added touch, you might be able to find a small toy anchor that you could attach to the bow.

good luck

What your going to have to do is make a bunch of seperate cakes and place them all together and carve parts of the cakes to make a submarine shape, look for the plans on yahoo or google.
Good Luck and happy birthday to your husband!

What about making a jelly roll cake using icing instead of jelly? Use a white icing and mix with food coloring until you get a gray color. Use the silver colored cake decorating balls for rivets and make a periscope out of candy such as tootise rolls or licorice. Another thing you can do instead of jelly or icing in the middle is ice cream. Good luck!

My sister did something similar for me, (of course it was supposed to be something else, but..)
You can use a thick glass measuring cup to bake the mix in. Use two fo them, pouring mixture evenly between two, and you will have two cylinder shaped cakes. You'll need to be creative as to making them stick together, flat-to-flat, but this will work. Dab frosting on your plate so the cake won't roll. Good luck!

I believe Wilton may make a football shaped 3D cake pan. You could use that to make the main shape, and then you would have to be creative about using different candies or even gum paste to create the rest.

i would just make a couple 9x13 cakes and cut out the shapes you need stick them together with frosting and decorate like you want it. ive seen football shaped cakes before..maybe you could get a pan for a football at your local craft store and just modify it a little.
