I love new england clam chowder. Decided to cook some myself. And was surprised to find out you have to use pork or bacon for it! Are there any recipies that dont require meat? And if anyone tried it - is it any good?

I found a bunch. Here's one:

1 quart soft-shell clams, lightly steamed
1 onion, chopped
3 medium potatoes, diced
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
1/4 lb butter
2 cups milk
salt and black pepper

1. Melt butter in a saucepan, add onion and cook until tender but not brown.
2. Add potatoes and just enough water to cook potatoes (about ten minutes).
3. When potatoes are tender add parsley, salt and pepper, and clams with their juice.
4. Just before serving add 2 cups milk and heat but do NOT boil.

Just use some good vegetable oil to start the onions and celery. The flavor in clam chowder should come from the clams and the spices. If the chowder is "flat" add some Tabasco!

You can have Clam Chowder without meat even though the recipe says use pork or bacon for it. I have tried it with fish and it is wonderful.

Then it wouldn't be clam chowder any more. It would be tofu chowder or tofam chowder.

You need to find out if your friend doesn't eat meat or just doesn't eat mammals.

You can do it...just start your base with olive oil, onions, black pepper, garlic & celery.....the bacon does add flavor though.
PS: For above??? Soft Shell Clams??? What are you talking about??No garlic or celery.......blahhhhh!!
