That is another consequence of a superficial and rich society. I do not think that all Americans are the same, but let's say most of them and according to the image they want also to let us see through the media, need to look perfect regardless their age, what ends up obviously in a big mess.
In the reality, every time I went to the US and had to go to a supermarket, I ended up sick because of the exaggerated offer of the same product with the more silly changes: is so easy to get cheated when first you are confused for so much to choose...
For giving a simple example: I wanted to eat yoghurt. So I went to get my pack when I found that they had yoghurt with 0%,0%half sugar, 0% no sugar, 0% with fruit and just keep on combining colorants, preservatives, vitamin D added, etc and many other impossible choices.
At the end, I stop searching and I picked up the brand I knew from my own country.
It drives mad anybody.
In addition, the frozen food, it is hard to find a simple steak just made for you that is not more than 3 cm thick and pre-packed.

The obsession for health feeds also a huge industry, the pharmaceutical, which comes from derivates of oil. Make your own conclusions regarding to this point. The American health system pushes the society to get leaner and stop smoking because that gets a real impact in their budgets This is starting to happen also in Europe, with the association of food companies selling products that are supposed to lower your cholesterol at lower price through the social security you have chosen.
It is not a bad idea, but how can you change the mentality of a family where for a matter of habit, economy or time they choose fast food for everybody instead of spending some hours in the kitchen per week?
Sure, it takes more time and money nowadays to get fresh potatoes and peel them off, boil them than using the powder and it' done. At least you do know what you are eating.
Not an easy issue.
Now is not only a problem of Americans, but from every person under their culture's influence. There is no way to be all rich, fit, forever young or clever.
Power and rich people will always exist, as day and night are complementary.
What you are questioning is the "American Dream" that is hurting so much people all over the world, creating unhappy people, always giving value to their person according to how much do they have. You are what you have and what you look like.
The sickness is wide-spread all over the world. I have seen it and it is hard to fight against it.

Looks--totally.

If we were into more health-foods, why would we have so many "lose pounds fast" in the form of pills and fad diets?

It's all about how you look.

Most Americans want to feel special. The bigger the boobs, the better. The larger the muscle, the better.

It's all about extremes--the smallest is the best.

Crazy though, how we say we are headed for obesity. One of the ways to beat obesity is to work out. Looking at work-out clothes, it's hard to imagine anyone obese fitting into anything but sweats.

We are definitely worried about looks. I think if we were worried about health, we wouldn't have so much heart disease and diabetes in this country, and we wouldn't be so overweight as a population. There also wouldn't be such a huge market for diet pills, stomach-stapling surgery or fad diet foods. If we wanted to be really fit, we would all just eat less and exercise more!

I don't think it's just Americans who are obsessed with looks, although I do think that American men tend to worry more about their bodies and bulking up than those of most other cultures.

I have to say that people are more obssessed with looking good. When it comes down to it nobody really thinks about their health when their trying to look good. Every day people harm their health because they want to look good.
